Austrian Post Acquires Remaining 49pct of Scanpoint Europe

Specialist for document digitalisation is now a 100pct Group subsidiary
Following its acquisition of a 51pct shareholding in Scanpoint Europe Holding GmbH in January of 2007, Austrian Post has purchased the remaining 49pctstake, effective retroactively in economic terms to January 1, 2008.

The core business of the Scanpoint Group is the data protected digitalisation of documents (i.e. files, policies, response collection, incoming mail, etc.), as well as the delivery of business-relevant information within the context of a customer’s in-house workflow. This acquisition enables Austrian Post to expand its portfolio of services by incorporating key stages of the document life cycle, for example, the intelligent digitalisation and classification of incoming mail directly in the letter mail sorting centres, and the electronic delivery of this mail to the responsible employees using some form of storage media, email or as a web archive file.

EU bans postal monopolies from 2011

National monopolies for mail delivery in the European Union will be dismantled by 2011, with postal companies free to operate in any of the EU’s 27 countries – meaning the Royal Mail could face threats by European competitors on British soil.

Nine new EU countries plus Greece and Luxembourg will get the option of an additional two years to prepare for a full opening of the delivery of letters under 50 grams (1.75 ounces) – the last category where national postal companies face no rivals.

The plan was approved by the European Parliament last Thursday 31st January.

A universal public service ensuring every European gets at least one delivery and collection a day, five days a week will still be guaranteed and can be subsidized by governments if it loses money.

Postal services in the European Union handle an estimated 135 billion items a year, with an estimated turnover of 88 billion Euros (GBP 65billion) – around 1 per cent of the union’s gross domestic product. The sector employs more than 5 million people.

Full liberalization should lead to cheaper and more reliable mail deliveries, according to EU officials.

It could also force the Royal Mail to scramble to remain competitive against European services moving to Britain – and raises the possibility of a Royal Mail service operating on the continent.

An organization representing customers and competitors of the public postal operators across the EU called on the national regulators to prevent national monopolies from unfair tactics.

DHL Germany launches new service for transportation of heavy goods

DHL Paket Deutschland, the German parcel division of DHL, has launched a new customer service under the name “DHL Maxitransport” for transportation of heavy and cumbrous objects like furniture and household appliances with effect 4 February 2008.

With the new service customers can ship almost everything up to 100 kg that can be carried by two persons. This weight limit does not apply to rollable objects like mopeds or motor-bikes since they do not have to be lifted during pick-up and delivery.

Moreover, the delivery does not end at the recipient’s door. DHL said it will even deliver items such as sofas into the living room on request.

If requested and for an additional charge, DHL also takes charge of packaging when picking up the shipment. The total price varies according to the volume or weight of the shipment as well as additional services. The order can be made via the internet through DHL online stamping in a similar way to parcel orders.

Uwe Brinks, DHL Paket Deutschland managing director, said: “We have to adapt our services continuously to the changing needs of our customers to be successful in the parcel market. With the DHL Maxitransport we are offering a very special service. A sofa can now be shipped as easily as a parcel”.

According to Wais, trans-o-flex Austria could account for 50 pct of the group’s overall parcels business in the medium-term.

Citing the trade publication KEP Meldungen, the Viennese daily Der Standard had earlier reported that Austria Post was pursuing a partnership with DHL-Express Austria.

Deutsche Post World Net and Daimler AG give go-ahead for the first hybrid truck in Europe

Deutsche Post World Net is the first logistics company in Europe to trial hybrid trucks in its operations. The go-ahead for the largest fleet test in the company’s history was given on January 29, 2008 during the World Mobility Forum in Stuttgart. Andreas Renschler, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Daimler Trucks, today handed over the first two vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid and a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, to Deutsche Post World Net.

The trial will initially include DHL Express operations in the UK as well as mail transport in Germany. In the coming months further Daimler hybrid vehicles will be integrated into the DHL fleet.

DHL can already draw on past experiences with hybrid vehicles in Japan where DHL has been successfully using the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid since July 2006.

Deutsche Post World Net is currently working on a comprehensive climate protection program for the entire Group. One point of focus is the use of alternative drives, such as electric, gas and hybrid engines. With its DHL Innovation Center, opened in March 2007, the Group thus is leading in technologies and innovations. It is facing up to its responsibility as the world’s market leader in logistics and helping to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
