DHL to seal ties with India Post

Deutsche Post is looking at developing a strategic partnership with the Indian postal system.

Through this venture, both postal authorities are aiming at strengthening their global business operations. The entities are in early stages of discussions to ascertain specific segments, like last mile delivery, sharing infrastructural facility & technological innovations in which they could strike a partnership and initiate operations.

According to sources close to the development, with this strategic partnership, DHL will leverage India Post’s vast infrastructural facility, almost 150,00 post offices spread all over India, for their last mile delivery operations and increasing its market penetration. India Post, on the other hand, will be looking at benefiting from the superior technical expertise of DHL in handling logistics operations. The final structure of the relationship, though, is yet to be finalized.

DHL, along with its 81 pct stake in the Indian air express company Blue Dart, already has a huge footprint in India in the express logistics and freight forwarding segment, though, limited to semi-urban and urban areas.

The new ‘high speed’ through the night service offers, computer, electronics and materials handling manufacturers with European-based distribution centers very late cut off times of 8pm for pick up and delivery into the UK before 8am the next morning. Niederrhein has been chosen as the European hub of this new through the night service as its location is near several hundred major distribution centres in Holland and North Western Germany and provides a straightforward collection opportunity.
Business Direct’s inbound European air service provides a completely seamless service linking directly in to its national network of over 300 Parcel Exchange facilities throughout the UK, in-boot service and next day technical courier services or direct into the manufacturer’s parts dealerships.

German postal workers may win minimum wage

German postal workers may be subject to a minimum wage from early next year after the ruling coalition parties reached a late-night deal to extend basic pay levels, Labor Minister Franz Muentefering said.
Muentefering said he expects postal services employers and the Ver.di labor union to agree this year on a minimum wage, a precondition for the government to make the pay level binding for postal workers across the country as a whole.
A statutory minimum wage may be good news for Deutsche Post AG, Europe’s biggest postal service, as it prepares for the end of its letter-delivery monopoly, its most profitable business, on Jan. 1. The company has forecast domestic competition will trim earnings at its mail division by as much as 20 percent by 2009. Minimum wage regulations would also apply to competitors such as Pin AG.
“The postal monopoly will be phased out, that can’t be changed, but we’ll introduce a minimum wage and that’s something we can get done this autumn,” Muentefering said.

Deutsche Post World Net has joined the international relief effort to help victims of the earthquake disaster in Peru. The DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) for the Americas region is supporting the National Civil Defense Institute at the Pisco Air Force Base with its logistics know-how. Deutsche Post World Net Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Klaus Zumwinkel: “This is part of our corporate social responsibility program.”

The DRT Americas, based in South Florida, and DRT Asia Pacific, based in Singapore, were both set up last year. The DRTs, whose services are provided, free of charge, each draw on a pool of about 80 DHL employees. Up to 15 DHL expert volunteers are on the scene at any one time.

In recent years, DHL and its employees have gained extensive experience in disaster relief management and are able to react quickly and in a professional manner to sudden natural disasters. The company has already used its transport and logistics skills as part of relief efforts launched after the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean, Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region and the earthquake in northern Pakistan.
