Deutsche Post may pay further three-digit mln dollar sum in U.S. revamp

Deutsche Post AG. may pay an additional three-digit million dollar sum in the announced restructuring of the company’s U.S. DHL business, Financial Times Deutschland reported, citing company sources.

The amount comes on top of the previously announced costs of USD 2 billion for the turnaround programme at the struggling unit, it added.

In May, the company said the loss-making U.S. operations of its DHL express unit will tie up in domestic and international airfreight shipments with United Parcel Service Inc. and will launch a cost-cutting programme.

The plans also involve the closure of a logistics hub at Wilmington, Ohio, while threatening up to 8,000 jobs at airline ABX.

Last week, Deutsche Post Chief Executive Frank Appel defended planned job cuts at the company’s U.S. DHL business, insisting in response to criticism voiced by U.S. politicians that the reductions are needed to turn the division around.

General Parcel opens new hub in the Czech Republic

Czech parcels carrier General Parcel Cechy, a subsidiary of Germany’s Geis Group, has opened its new central hub at Chomutovice, close to the capital, Prague.

The company has invested about EUR 5 million in the new parcel hub which includes a 2,100 sqm building. The new facility has capacity for up to 7,000 parcels an hour. It has 15 docks for loading and 5 docks for unloading of trucks including enough space to be expanded to up to two more truck docks.

“The new hub enables us to keep up with the increasing shipping volume which is rising by 30pct per year,” said Joachim Fink, managing director of the Geis Group.

The new central hub will handle only parcels while the former mixed hub at nearby Modletice will handle only freight shipments in future. The separation of parcel and freight handling will thus increases capacity at both hubs while still enabling the company to profit from the synergies provided by their close proximity, General Parcel said.

Daniel Knaisl, managing director of General Parcel Cechy, highlighted the good location of the new hub. “Our new facility is located about 2 km from the Czech main traffic axis, the D1 motorway from Prague to Brno. This is thus an ideal position for a central hub.”

trans-o-flex switches completely to eco-power

The trans-o-flex logistics group is the first operator of a full-coverage distribution network in Germany to switch its electricity supply completely to eco-power. The additional costs for eco-power amount to a five-figure Euro sum per year.

The decision is part of a sustainability strategy the company has been following for some years. In this connection, trans-o-flex compiled a complete CO2 statement for 2007 for the first time to identify where what quantities of the climate-change gas are being produced or caused. Changing to electricity from renewable sources alone will improve the Group’s CO2 record by between 4 and 5 pct.
