GLS Slovenia launches new express delivery service

GLS Slovenia has launched a new next-day express delivery service under the name “ Express-Parcel” to provide a faster shipping alternative for customers.

The Express-Parcel service offers guaranteed delivery by 17:00 the next day. Customers can also select earlier, time-definite delivery. Depending on the selected delivery option, the parcel can be delivered the next morning by 10:00 or 12:00, or customers can select delivery within a definite time period such as 14:00 – 15:00.

“With the expansion of our product portfolio we are offering individual and precise delivery timings. We deliver important spare parts, reordered merchandise or product components required just-in-time at an exact time,” explained Janez Vengust, GLS Slovenia division manager. “This provides more planning reliability and flexibility for our customers”.

GLS Slovenia, the country’s second-largest parcel operator, said it offers not only a reliable but also a safe service by automatically insuring all its products such as “ Business-Parcel”, “Small Business- Parcel” or the new “Express-Parcel” for value of up to euro 250. Additional insurance for higher value goods is also available.

The parcels firm has also recently modernised its IT system to ensure reliable and transparent tracking and tracing for all product types.

GLS increased its sales to 1.75 billion euros – an increase of 9.2 per cent. The number of parcels handled totalled 335 million, representing a new record. EBITA at 172 million euros was in line with expectations.
GLS invested approximately 47 million euros in capital expenditure in 2007/08. In addition to France and Romania, new hubs and depots were opened in Austria and Poland; and additional franchise depots were acquired in Italy. The integration of GLS Belgium Distribution (formerly ABX BELGIUM Distribution) into the GLS system is also progressing as planned.
In 2008/09, GLS is planning network investments totalling 94 million euros – with significant investments in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and France. The focus will be on rolling out industrial parcel production processes throughout the network as well as implementing new solutions for the “last mile” in B2C business. Other priorities will be the expansion of the GLS national and international express product offering, and GLS will continue to pursue global partnerships such as the recent cooperation agreement with Gati Ltd. in India.
GLS is expecting the European CEP market to grow at a moderate rate of ca. 3.5 per cent. In its international business, GLS Group is planning double-digit growth rates.

GLS Belgian subsidiary ABX re-brands

ABX Belgium Distribution, acquired by GLS in December 2006, has re-branded to GLS Belgium Distribution as part of its integration into the European parcels group and ongoing modernisation.

Since acquiring the parcel and general cargo business ABX Belgium Distribution, GLS has started a five-year investment of EUR 16 million in modernising the company, including new firewall installations, scanners and security and surveillance technology. Two separate parcel sorting and freight handling systems are being installed at the subsidiary’s depots. Four of its nine depots work with the new systems, and the others should be completed by spring 2009.

“The modernisation measures will strengthen the company and increase quality,” Fritze explained. “In the Benelux countries GLS offers cross-border delivery of freight shipments in addition to its national and international logistics service – one address which is now also one brand.”

GLS reportedly spent about EUR 23 million to win a battle with other European CEP players to buy ABX Belgium Distribution from Belgian Railways in 2006 and thus become the largest B2B parcel company in Belgium. ABX Belgium Distribution generated revenues of approximately EUR 90 million in 2005, two-thirds of which came from the parcel business.

GLS inaugurated a new hub in France

GLS opened its EUR 4,5 million parcels distribution hub at Roquemaure, near Avignon, South-East France, to finalise its transport plan for southern France. With the new hub, the company expects to optimize its service quality to better cope with the rising parcel volumes in the region.

Built on a surface of 30,000 sqm, the new 4,000 sqm facility is equipped with the latest technology and has the capacity to sort 45,000 parcels a day. The site has 100 quays, 40 for HGVs and 60 for smaller vehicles. It will serve as a hub and as an agency at the same time thanks to a special delivery zone differentiating the two parties and assuring the safety of the parcels.

The new Roquemaure hub will employ 70 local workers. Following the opening of GLS’s hub in Uzerche in January 2007, this is the final part of the EUR 100 million that GLS invested in Europe during 2006-2007 to further expand its network.
