Gati Ltd. is new GLS partner in India

On April 1st, parcel exchange between GLS and Gati Limited will begin. The two companies signed a partner agreement on 25 February 2008

With its full-area coverage distribution network, only Gati Ltd. delivers to 594 out of 604 districts in India. The company has over 3,500 employees and operates with 2,000 business associates to provide these services. Freight and parcel shipments are as much a part of the portfolio as are warehousing and supply chain management solutions. In addition to road and rail-based transports, Gati operates closely with Air India to realise national air express deliveries. Ship transports are also available for freight and container transports in the Asia Pacific region. The company is listed on the Indian National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Parcels from India are distributed by GLS through the airfreight office in Frankfurt as well as the central hub in Neuenstein, Germany, to the hubs of its subsidiaries and partners in Europe. In India, shipments from the GLS system first arrive at the central distribution center in Delhi. From there, Gati sends them to their respective destination via 19 express distribution centers. This all serves to bring the seventh largest country in the world, covering an area of 3.2 million square kilometres, with its 1.1 billion inhabitants, a lot closer to European parcel consignors.

GLS to offers real-time tracking in Germany and Austria

GLS is now enabling its customers to track their parcels in real-time in Germany and Austria. The service is planned to be rolled out at other European subsidiaries in the next phase.

The parcels company said it has equipped its delivery staff with bluebooth-enabled mobile phones for data exchange with their hand-held scanners. On delivery GLS collects the digital signature and scans the individual parcel ID.

The delivery confirmation is then transmitted from the mobile phone directly into the GLS central tracking and tracing IT system. Customers can thus check their shipment status about 15 minutes after delivery. Up to now, the data was first transferred when the delivery van returned to the depot, meaning customers had to wait several hours for tracking availability.

Recipients not at home at the time of delivery can also check where their shipment has been held: at a neighbour’s, at a GLS parcel shop or back at the depot.

GLS said that the next step will be to extend real-time tracking to further European subsidiaries.

GLS France to open six model depots

GLS France has announced plans to open six “model depots” in Metz, Roissy, Bordeaux, Vitrolles, Lyon and Rennes equipped with the latest sorting technology and which will go into operation in the first half of 2008.

These sites will serve as a model for other GLS subsidiaries in each region. The parcel operator plans to roll out the new technology in all its French subsidiaries and depots.

GLS said it will invest EUR 10 million in the acquisition of new sorting machines and IT tools to optimize the delivery and distribution of its freight and to maintain the quality.

After installing new technology in the distribution hub in Fleury, GLS has developed a new generation of modular conveyors destined for agencies and depots to handle single parcels in the same way like pallets.

One of the innovations is telescopic handles that connect the lorries directly to the sorting chain and thus reduce the times of loading and unloading considerably.

In addition, the video monitoring system and the new scanning technology recently implemented in the depots will ensure traceability of the parcels from pick-up until delivery to the recipient. This new equipment will enhance the transparency and the security of GLS services, the company said.
