TNT NV said it will invest 100 mln eur in its India operations in the coming five years. TNT said it wants to increase its market share in India by expanding its workforce and enlarging its capacity. TNT hopes to employ approximately 1,600 staff by the end of 2010 and hopes to then be market leader in the country.

The new centre will cater to 43 courier routes operating out of it in 2 cycles, which will nearly double the current shipment handling capacity at the centre. The new centre will also have the DHL Customer Service Centre, which can double up as the disaster recovery site. DHL has over 5,000 customers in Tamil Nadu and Chennai is the third largest market for the company in India.

This follows a move by the government to entrust the Department of Posts to register operators carrying out functions of collection, transmission and delivery of documents and parcels through a proposed amendment. Section 4 of the Indian Post Office Act 1898 confers on the central government the exclusive privilege of collection, transmission and delivery of letters. In a memorandum addressed to union minister of information technology & communications Dayanidhi Maran, Express Industry Council states, “The proposed amendment to this section seeks to confer on the central government the discretion to authorise any person to engage in any or all the activities stated in that section.” In fact, this would mean direct competition to the traditional postal service, erode its financial viability and consequently, its ability to provide an affordable universal service.
