FedEx First to launch overnight delivery from India to China

FedEx Express today announced the launch of a new flight offering the first overnight express link between India and China. The flight is part of a new eastbound around the world route–connecting Europe, India, China and Japan with the FedEx U.S. hub in Memphis–that will provide unprecedented access to and from the world’s largest markets. Using a wide-bodied MD-11 freighter, FedEx will double its current capacity between Europe and Asia with the addition of 850,000 pounds per week. “This new route will relieve mounting capacity constraints for international express service across Europe to Asia, especially the two powerhouse economies of India and China,” said Michael L. Ducker, executive vice president-international, FedEx Express. “Furthermore, it is another ‘FedEx first’ as we provide the industry’s first overnight express link between India and China. Our service from Delhi to Shanghai will benefit our customers, whose business is fueling this USD14 billion trade route.”

Indian postal dept revamps network

Faced with a huge budgetary deficit, the Department of Post has rejigged its postal network, affecting nearly 400 loss-making post offices across the country
While 30 post offices have been closed, 172 have been merged with a bigger post office. Another 123 offices have been downgraded and 56 have been relocated to more lucrative areas. “The move is in line with the 10th Five Year Plan that requires the department to rationalise its network and optimise its resources with a view to achieving financial self-sufficiency while continuing to fulfil its universal services obligation,” said a Ministry of Communication official
Though the number of post offices restructured is very small compared to the base of 1.55 lakh post offices in the country, the postal department has taken a decision to merge or relocate more such post offices.

The Department of Posts received nearly 12,000 articles on the day of the launch of Direct Post service in the district on Monday, to be delivered to the public. A bulk of them was from the Life Insurance Corporation of India, Unit Trust of India and Oriental Insurance Company.

Air India seeks private partnership in cargo business

With plans of roping in a strategic partner, flag carrier Air-India (A-I) is set to begin discussions with air cargo majors, like Federal Express, DHL and UPS. This is apart from the cargo arms of international carriers, like British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France.

The carrier would be looking at two possible options, where it could either float a JV company with equal public-private equity partnership or sell 50 percent stake after hiving-off its Rs 600-crore cargo business into a separate subsidiary.

Confirming the move, the union minister for civil aviation, Praful Patel said to ToI, “A-I’s cargo business can be turned into a big time revenue earning stream. Along with the growth in passenger traffic, primarily driven by economic growth, the air cargo business is turning out to be a lucrative business proposition.”
