FedEx Express names new regional chief for Middle East/Africa

FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, has announced the appointment of Brian Britnor as Regional Manager Sales for Global Service Participants (GSP) & Airline Sales, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa.

In his new position, Britnor will focus on maintaining FedEx’s world-class service standards. This appointment further strengthens FedEx’s position in the region and confirms the company’s continued commitment to its customers.

DHL ‘will have world-class infrastructure in India by 2005’

DHL, wholly owned by the world’s largest transport and logistics company, Bonn-based Deutsche Post World Net, is truly global. DHL’s network covers 120,000 destinations in more than 200 countries and territories, employing over 160,000 people,420 aircraft, and 75,000 vehicles. It has 36 hubs, 900 depots, 238 gateways and 5000 offices. DHL handles one billion shipments every year catering to the requirements of 4.2 million customers. In the Asia-Pacific region also DHL is the clear market leader. The size of business amounts to euro 3 billion on a customer base of 250,000. More than 40 million shipments and 623 million kg of freight and over 430,000 TEUs are handled through six hubs employing 20,000 employees, 5000 vehicles and 20 dedicated freighters. About 800 commercial flights are operated per day. Mr John Mullen, CEO of DHL Express in Asia Pacific, recently spoke to Business Line in Hong Kong.

DHL launches Indian ‘Rakhi Express’ service

Sisters can now send ‘rakhis’ to their brothers living overseas, along with a box of kumkum, some rice, a letter and a gift at a discount of 50 per cent, thanks to a new service by world’s leading logistics firm DHL.
The ‘Rakhi Express’ service is available from August 9 to 29 and “is designed to bridge the distance between families across countries,” DHL said.
The DHL Rakhi Express service is timed to coincide with this year’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’, the festival that celebrates sisters’ love for their brothers.

DHL to launch festival express in India

Close on the heels of the success of the Mango Express, launched in the summer, DHL Express is set to launch another retail product, Festival Express, next month.

According to the Head, Marketing, Mr Ramesh Natarajan, the company plans to launch special products for Rakhi and Deepavali under the project.The scope of the product was currently being studied, he said. The company hopes to target the large number of families who have friends and relatives abroad while selling the product.

Government of India urged to review postal subsidy

The Economic Survey 2003-2004 has urged the Government of India to review the postal subsidy, which is estimated at Rs1,204 crore for 2004-2005.

The survey said that though deficit dropped from Rs1,550 crore in 2000-2001 to Rs1,364 crore in 2002-2003, the Government needs to clarify the size of the subsidy. All services of the post offices are currently subsidised. User charges in the postal system covers about 78 percent of the costs. The biggest subsidy is on money orders with a per unit subsidy of Rs28.50. This adds up to about Rs331 crore to the postal deficit.
