E-Post service launched in India

The Department of Posts have announced the introduction of “e-post” under which printed or even hand-written messages will be scanned at 650 designated e-post offices and transmitted as e-mail through the Internet.

The messages will be printed and enveloped at the destination centres and delivered by postmen with other ordinary letters. The cost of e-mail has been pegged at Rs. 10 a page.Besides delivering “e-post” to any postal address within the country, e-post messages can be delivered to any e-mail ID in the world. Since e-post messages are scanned and sent, they can be in any language and even hand-written. They can contain pictures and graphics and can be sent to multiple addresses.

ITU, India and UPU partnership helps Bhutan bridge the digital divide

The Government of India, in partnership with two UN agencies, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), will help boost the delivery of e-post services to citizens in the least accessible parts of its south Asian neighbour, Bhutan with a package of equipment, satellite capacity and training resources worth some USD 450,000. The resulting e-post service will allow people without computers in remote areas to send e-mail between post offices for printing and delivery.

India will help Bhutan’s E-Shabtog venture by providing instant connectivity to six more remote post offices that are not connected by the national fixed telecommunication network. Two of the stations, Laya and Lunana, are located over 5,000 metres above sea level, are snowbound for 8 months of the year, lack of electricity and paved roads and are a 5-8 day walk from the nearest road.

20% growth in demand for express courier services in Mumbai

The express and courier industry has had a good year with corporates adopting logistics solutions in a big way. At the same time, the common man is accessing express and courier services on a daily basis, according to Mr Tushar Jani, Chairman, Blue Dart Express Ltd.

The demand for express and courier services has spurred around 20% growth in the segment over the year, he said.

The new focus is on segments including express linked logistics and life sciences logistics. Under express linked logistics, the company is looking at offering services such as repair and return, break bulk solutions and tech courier as a cost effective strategy. The company has started doing projects for a few multi nationals in India.
