Overtime strike hits Railway Mail Service delivery

Overtime strike by around 500 group C and D employees of Railway Mail Service (RMS) in the ‘F’ division of Nagpur has badly affected the delivery of mail.

The employees, affiliated to National Federation Postal Employees (NFPE), are up in arms against the management for going back on its assurances to fulfill the genuine demands. The federation leaders said that they had submitted a charter of 15 demands to the divisional head in a meeting held on May 22.

The strike has been simultaneously launched at Nagpur, Malkapur, Gondia, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Wardha, Akola and Amravati.

Postal Department to sell State Bank of India products

The Department of Posts and Telegraph, Government of India, has tied up with the State Bank of India (SBI) for selling SBI’s term deposit certificates through its post offices. Post offices in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Orissa, Jharkhand and Rajasthan will be selling the SBI certificates. The Department already has similar arrangements with Corporation Bank, Union Bank of India and the Oriental Bank of Commerce.

Emirates SkyCargo offers new services to Africa and Subcontinent

The new routes service busy destinations Colombo, Delhi, and Entebbe and will operate on SkyCargo’s A310-300F’s with a capacity of 36,500 kgs.

Freighter services to Delhi, introduced on May 24th will operate on Thursdays. Outbound from Dubai to Delhi the route is expected to deliver telecommunication equipment while imports are expected to include finished leather and garments and Indian domestic products.

The Colombo service which was launched on 13th of May will operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. Outbound service to Colombo will carry personal effects and general cargo motor spare parts while inbound cargo will consist of garments and vegetables and fish, much of which will go on to Europe.

Finally, the new operations will include a second frequency to Entebbe on Saturdays via Nairobi. Outbound from Dubai the services will carry mainly personal effects while inbound freight will consist of fish and vegetables for Europe.

Saudi Post’s parcel service wins laurels

Saudi Post (SP) through its Express Mail and Parcels Administration has launched a new service called “Indian Par Ex,” which is dedicated to the Indian expatriate community who will now be able to send parcels to India at SR6 a kilo.

SP also guarantees parcel will be delivered in a maximum of 12 days and in case of delay, the corporation will refund people’s money along with the cost of parcel’s contents. In addition, parcels costing less than SR800 do not need to pay custom fees.

According to a Saudi Post official, sending parcels to India used to cost SR119 per parcel and that it used to sometimes take around 15 days for the parcels to reach their destinations. He added that Indians send around 300 parcels annually and so SP decided to offer competitive prices.

Saudi Post also recently won an award at the 8th World Mail Awards 2007, which was held in the Novotel London West Hotel. SP Post won the award in the “Transformation” category for the creation of its Naqel carrier.

According to Saudi Post President Dr. Muhammad Bantan, the king approved the Naqel project last October, which now serves 5,000 cities and villages in the Kingdom via 6,000 branches.

E-post service gains momentum in Karnataka

The inception of e-post service has helped the Karnataka postal circle rake in revenues to the tune of Rs 5,34,440 till April 30, 2007.

According to Meera Datta, postmaster general, the Karnataka circle has handled 53009 messages since the e-post service was introduced in January 30, 2004.

Terming the response towards the service as “encouraging,” Datta said, “There are 27 identified e-post centers in Karnataka. These identified e-post centers are equipped with computers, Internet and flatbed scanners to receive and send e-posts.”

Department of Posts (DoP) introduced the e-post service to bridge the digital divide and to bring the benefits of the Internet technology to rural areas.

The customers are charged Rs 10 per page of A4 size. E-post messages can be sent to any postal address in India or e-mail ID anywhere in the world.

The e-post center scans the message and e-mails it to the destination Post Office. The destination Post Office prints the message and delivers it to the addressee, enclosed in an e-post cover.
