Help avert postal strike, Yechury tells PM

As postal employees gear up to go on a nationwide strike, senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury today asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene in the matter to resolve the standoff.
In a letter to Singh, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member said the demands raised by the employees “appear very reasonable” and sought a settlement to avert the strike so that services are not disrupted.
The demands of the postal employees include setting up of a judicial commission for Gramin Dak Sewaks (GDS) as per the normal practice instead of forming a committee with a retired officer as Chairman of the GDS Committee.
“This is in clear violation of an agreement reached during the 1993 postal strike….Therefore, the demand for setting up the Judicial Commission is fully justified and cannot be compromised,” he said in the letter.
Other demands are recognition to the National Federation of Postal Employees and scrapping of a decision to hand over certain post offices in urban areas to private parties as franchisees.
“This is the beginning of the privatisation of postal services in the country. The Unions are totally opposed to the scheme. But despite the opposition, postal authorities are going ahead with their decision,” he observed.

“These demands appear very reasonable and I cannot conceive of any pressing reasons why they are not being accepted,” Yechury said and urged the Prime Minister to personally intervene in the matter.

TNT starts bio fuel pilot in India – a “Driving Clean” initiative to reduce carbon emissions

TNT launched a pilot project in India to use bio fuel for its delivery vehicles. The initial phase will see specially trained drivers run three bio fuel trucks between Pune, Nasik and Bangalore, covering a total of 45,000 kilometres per month. Routes and driving times are optimized to further reduce carbon emissions. If the project proves efficient, TNT intends to expand it within its Indian fleet of vehicles.

The Indian government already promotes bio fuel trains for transporting passengers and freight. Close to 44 million hectares – equivalent to two-thirds of the Netherlands’ area – of degraded forest land are currently used in India for growing the vegetation needed for alternative fuel. Local farmers will benefit from growing bio fuel crops, which can be a new source of revenues and jobs.

TNT’s bio fuel pilot project in India is part of the company’s global “Driving Clean” initiative to improve its environmental performance. TNT is already using alternative fuels and technologies in a variety of pilot projects in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany and Australia.

Land of the Rising Hubs

Changi Airports International still runs Singapore”s international airport, but these days it is pushing aggressively into other Asian markets. The wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore”s Civil Aviation Authority announced in late February it had formed a partnership with Indian conglomerate Tata Group to bid jointly for airport projects in India.

The agreement came just weeks after Changi announced it would spend USD138 million to acquire a 29 percent position in China”s Nanjing Lukou International Airport.

Hong Kong International Airport has already moved into Mainland China taking on the management of Zhuhai Airport under a 20-year agreement.

HKIA formed another joint venture in China in mid-December, this time with Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport.

Attracted by an ambitious expansion program led by the government, and by the flood of related businesses moving into China, foreign capital and management expertise is also pouring into China”s airport operations.

China shows no signs of running out of expansion opportunities for foreign airports any time soon. The country”s dizzying growth in air traffic has the authorities scrambling in a race to avoid paralysis. By last June, 18 of China”s 142 commercial airports had reached capacity, and another 29 stood to reach their cargo limits by 2010, the Civil Aviation Administration of China warned.

Aiming to push the number of commercial airports in China to 186 by 2010, authorities in Beijing have earmarked more than USD17.5 billion for modernization and construction of airports over the next four years.

FedEx Express is developing a USD150 million hub at Guangzho airport, which is slated to become the integrator”s largest hub outside the United States. FedEx is building an 880,000-square-foot facility sitting on 156 acres with a capacity to handle up to 24,000 packages in an hour. DHL, which expanded its express facilities at several Chinese airports last year, has pledged to set up an operations center at Baiyun.

On the freight side, the biggest push for the airport likely will come from China Southern Airlines, which is based in Guangzhou.
