Roberts Europe teams up with e-kurier.net for European capacity

Time-critical freight logistics company Roberts Europe has signed a partnership agreement with German-based online freight capacity platform “e-kurier.net” to increase its available capacity and generate more business for the courier platform members.

The cooperation with e-kurier.net is part of Roberts Europe’s expansion plan in Germany including restructuring and investment in state-of-the-art automating systems. With the agreement, the company aims at integrating the e-kurier.net solutions in its new planning systems.

Under the partnership, Roberts Europe will have access to spare capacity offered by the platform’s 1,800 German and European members, which will be mostly empty return journeys. It expects to optimise its shipping capacity and thus reduce costs for customers. In return, e-kurier.net’s courier companies will increase their volumes through Roberts Europe’s sales and marketing activities.

The automation systems of both companies are now connected to each other so that Robert Europe can book free shipping space.

Fred Snippe, owner and CEO of Roberts Europe, commented: “e-kurier.net and its members are absolute professionals. We complement each other in our core competences and can therefore achieve a strong win-win situation for all parties.”

Parcelnet acquires TNT post’s courier business (UK)

Parcelnet has acquired the courier business of TNT Post. Under the agreement, Parcelnet has integrated TNT Post’s nationwide courier operation and the home delivery contract for catalogue and online retailer JD Williams into its existing UK business, enhancing the company’s network in terms of size and throughput.

Parcelnet has also become TNT Post’s preferred home delivery partner as part of the deal. Parcelnet’s presence in London and the south east of England, enabling the company to introduce enhanced service offers in the future. In addition, Parcelnet has taken on 100 full-time employees that previously held field, support and management roles within TNT Post, allowing the company to make best use of expertise and best practise.

Commenting on the acquisition, Carole Woodhead, Managing Director at Parcelnet, said: ”This latest development builds on the acquisition of the Redcats courier business last year, further strengthening our network, enabling service enhancements and providing continued growth of our client base.”

Government to regulate courier sector, Bill likely in monsoon session

The government will soon amend the Indian Postal Act to bring courier companies under the ambit of this Act, a move that may hit hard the private players but could prove to be a shot in the arm for the Indian Postal Department.

According to sources, the Communication and IT Minister A Raja has given a go-ahead to the department to place the amendment in the Cabinet soon and the amended Act will be introduced in Parliament in the forthcoming Monsoon session.

If approved, this would bar the private courier service providers from carrying packets weighing below 500 grams and could give a major blow to the courier companies which earn a major share of their revenues from letter and packets weighing below half a kilogram.

However, this would also give a chance to both the parties — private courier service providers and India Post– to have business partnership with each other.

Department of Trade officials said this could prove to be a win-win situation for both parties and added that through business partnership India Post will earn more revenues to become self- sufficient.

The government said the India Post Office (Amendment) Bill is being given final touches and is likely to be introduced in the monsoon session of Parliament.

The government is also planning to bring in a regulator called the Mail Regulatory and Development Authority to monitor this sector better.

Department of Trade, which is poised for a face-lift with new schemes in its kitty, also has plans to expand its basket of financial services and may remodel some of the post offices into postal finance marts.

Appel Discusses DPWN's Prospects in China

CEO Frank Appel has implied that DHL Express has 40 pct of the Chinese international express market and that his principal interest is in expanding the German global logistics group’s business in that country.

Appel discussed a number of the issues which have thrust his company into the headlines on both sides of the Atlantic. He continued to dodge questions about redundancies at the DHL hub in Wilmington, Ohio, following the company’s recently-announced restructuring of its US operations but stated that land transport business in North America was profitable. He also described himself as “not in any haste” on the issue of the Deutsche Post Bank sale, despite rumours that a number of offers have already been received and that a deal might be agreed within a few weeks.

Appel was more forthcoming about his company’s prospects in China, where he implied that DHL Express had a market-leading position. When journalists suggested that DHL Express controlled roughly 40 pct of the international express delivery market in China he replied that “what is being mentioned isn’t totally wrong”. He went on to say that he “saw no essential need to expand the company’s market share” in the cross-border express business.

However, it is in logistics that DPWN sees the most business development potential where China is concerned. Appel said the Chinese logistics market was highly fragmented but offered even more growth opportunities than express. The problem for the company was finding the right sort of partners in order to pursue that growth.
