Toll purchase of Courier Australia boost to WA presence

Toll Holdings has reached an agreement on the purchase of West Australian
based Courier Australia.

Courier Australia is a Courier and Express transport and logistics group, based in
Western Australia. It was established in 1959 and employs about 600 staff and
independent contractors in that state. Courier Australia has a strong regional
network in Western Australia which will add scale to some of Toll’s existing
courier and express businesses.

Eco-friendly electric delivery vans launched in Wuhan (PRC)

TNT and Dongfeng Automotvies yesterday launched trials of China’s first two zero-emissions electric delivery vans in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province.

The electric delivery vans are powered by rechargeable batteries and do not use any petrol. They will operate emission-free in the central city areas of Wuhan, servicing the express delivery needs of TNT’s customers. TNT’s CEO Peter Bakker said that the trial launch of China’s first two electric delivery vans is significant as it will be the first market outside of Europe that TNT is undertaking these trials.

They will operate emission-free in the central city areas of Wuhan, servicing the express delivery needs of TNT’s customers. TNT’s CEO Peter Bakker said that the trial launch of China’s first two electric delivery vans is significant as it will be the first market outside of Europe that TNT is undertaking these trials.

He said the trials will reduce CO2 emissions from their own delivery fleet, and that that they would establish six new international express service locations in China this year and plan to also establish a network linking China, Vietnam and Singapore. Peter Bakker said that electric delivery vans are designed mainly to provide short-distance and intra-city express services.

Although electric delivery vans are still expensive in terms of research and development costs, Peter Bakker emphasized that they are cheap to maintain and thus beneficial for the long-term interests of both consumers and for environmental protection.

DHL Vice President wins award from leading transportation industry advocacy group

DHL announced that Al Burba, vice president of field sales for DHL Express, has been honored as the 2008 “NASSTRAC Associate Member of the Year.

NASSTRAC provides education, advocacy, connections and solutions for professionals involved in all areas of transportation. NASSTRAC’s Chairperson, Gail Rutkowski, along with its executive committee and staff, recommended Burba for the award due in part to his active leadership role with the organization’s newly formed Carrier Advisory Council.

According to Rutkowski, Burba has also assisted in the development of curriculum for educational forums, secured shipper participation in NASSTRAC, and brought new, creative thinking and approaches to the organization, which has helped professionals who manage freight decisions collaborate with fellow supplier members.

NASSTRAC involves mid- to upper-level management of transportation or supply chain management companies. Industries including retail, pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetics, food and beverage, and manufacturing are represented. As a leading advocacy organization for the transportation industry, NASSTRAC helps its members stay on top of legislative developments, regulatory issues and related transportation issues impacting shippers.

TNT introduces new brand in Brazil: “TNT Mercurio”

TNT introduces a new brand for its express delivery services in Brazil: “Mercurio” becomes “TNT Mercurio”. Combining two well-established names, the new brand embodies the successful transformation of Mercurio, the Brazilian express leader TNT acquired in January 2007, as well as TNT’s commitment to Brazil.
TNT Mercurio is the leader of the Brazilian domestic express market with a market share of 15 pct. Its operations cover more than 4,000 cities across Brazil. TNT Mercurio serves 35,000 customers and employs 7,000 employees spread over 130 branches and franchises. It provides both domestic and cross-border road delivery services, using its own fleet of 1,500 vehicles and 2,000 sub-contracted ones.
All 1,500 vehicles will be rebranded by the end of 2009. The new brand means a lot to the Brazilian express market.
TNT Mercurio wants to strengthen its leadership position by investing in new vehicles, depots and infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art call center in São Paulo.
Besides growing in the Brazilian domestic market, TNT Mercurio is seeking to connect other South American countries by road.
Furthermore, TNT is looking into ways to strengthen its air connectivity between Brazil and Europe, linking its South American road infrastructure to international air routes.

UPS shareowners elect board and reappoint Deloitte & Touche

Shareowners of UPS elected a Board of Directors for a one-year term and ratified the appointment of Deloitte & Touche LLP as the company’s independent registered public accountants.

Ten directors stood for election to the Board of Directors and all were overwhelmingly elected. The appointment of Deloitte & Touche to serve as the company’s independent auditors for 2008 also was ratified by a wide margin.
