TNT opens scheduled road connection to Ukraine

TNT Express becomes the first express integrator to open an international road connection to Ukraine to handle growing shipping volumes to and from one of Europe’s fastest-growing economies.

Connecting TNT’s industry leading Express Road Network in Europe and Ukraine’s largest overnight network, the new route will link Ukraine’s major economic centres, such as Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Odessa, to Europe and the rest of the world via Kiev and TNT’s road hub in Warsaw, Poland. With this move, more businesses can benefit from TNT’s market-leading Economy Express service. This on demand, day-definite door to door service with full track-and-trace functionality is particularly interesting for exporters and importers who require an economical, secure and sufficiently fast express service for parcel and freight shipments weighing up to 1,000 kg (palletised).

“This extension is part of TNT’s strategy to strengthen our number one position in the international intra-European express market (B2B), where we have a 26 percent market share, and to capture growth from emerging markets, such as Eastern Europe”, says Jan Willem Breen, Marketing & Sales Director of TNT Express.

Ukraine has achieved a 7.4 percent annual economic growth during 2000-06*, fuelled by increased international trade, strong investment growth, and booming private consumption. It is a market of 48 million people with rising incomes and in close proximity to the European Union. The country was invited to join the World Trade Organization on 5th February 2008. The majority of Ukrainian exports are marketed to the European Union and CIS.

Built up over 35 years, TNT’s Express Road Network (ERN) connects 16 road hubs and 415 depots in 34 European countries. Every week, 750 trucks move about 640,000 documents, parcels and pieces of freight, driving the equivalent of 56 times around the world. The ERN’s main international road hub is located in the Dutch town of Duiven.

UPS expands supplier diversity program to include LGBT-owned businesses

UPS announced the expansion of its award-winning supplier diversity process to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)-owned businesses through a partnership with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

NGLCC-certified businesses now can register to participate in UPS’s supplier diversity process. Launched in 1992, the supplier diversity process provides UPS business opportunities for small businesses and those owned by minorities, women, veterans and now lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.

The NGLCC represents the interests of an estimated 1.4 million LGBT-owned businesses. Through its affiliated network of 45 state and local chambers and business organizations, the NGLCC is the largest LGBT business development and economic advocacy organization in the country.

Additionally, as part of its partnership with the NGLCC, UPS is offering members of the organization a discount on UPS shipping services.

UPS has been recognized for the success of its supplier diversity efforts by organizations such as the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), Women Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and Women Impacting Public Policy. Last year, UPS won NMSDC’s top corporate award and was listed as one of the top corporations for Women Business Enterprises by WBENC.

In addition to leading its industry in expanding its supplier diversity process to include LGBT-owned businesses, UPS also is a leader in its commitment to LGBT employees. The company recently received a top rating of 100 percent, the highest in its industry, from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, which measures how employers treat LGBT employees based on factors such as non-discrimination policies, diversity training and benefits for domestic partners and transgender employees.

DHL Express validated for C-TPAT program

DHL announced today that DHL Express has been validated for C-TPAT, the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, after a thorough review of its air express and ground shipment processing facilities and operations. C-TPAT is a joint government-business initiative designed to protect the security of the U.S. supply chain. Companies that are certified contribute to the security of our U.S. borders and to the continued facilitation of legitimate international trade.

As part of the validation process, domestic and international DHL facilities underwent a detailed security review of operations by customs authorities, including procedures and guidelines followed by DHL personnel and contractors, and the use of technology and physical assets. The US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) review also included Express’ customs brokerage and international clearance operations.

“This validation acknowledges our commitment to security procedures followed by our personnel, our air service providers, as well as those in place to protect our customers’ shipments,” said T. James Min II, Vice President, International Trade Affairs & Compliance, DHL Express USA. “DHL’s commitment to stringent security measures plays a key role in helping the U.S. Customs and Border Protection maintain the security of U.S. borders and curb potential terrorist activities in the global supply chain.”

To qualify for membership in C-TPAT, companies must conduct a detailed self-assessment of supply chain security using the C-TPAT guidelines outlined by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the trade community. Companies must also submit a supply chain security profile questionnaire to Customs, and implement a program to enhance security throughout the supply chain in accordance with the C-TPAT guidelines.

DHL Express was initially certified for C-TPAT by Customs and Border Protection in 2003 with validations taking place in 2006 and 2007.

Vehicle design innovation saves fuel and reduces CO2

DHL Exel Supply Chain and TK Maxx have partnered with manufacturer Don-Bur to design and develop a new aerodynamic front bulkhead air deflector for double deck trailers that provides both environmental benefits, carbon and cost reductions without compromising the cubic capacity of the vehicle.

Results from initial controlled trials by DHL show that the new air deflector can provide up to 3.5pct savings on fuel and can reduce CO2 by 20kg per daily trip or an equivalent of 5.25 tonnes per vehicle per annum. Following the successful trial, the air deflector has been fitted to ten of TK Maxx’s new double deck trailers and once retrofitted to the remaining 92 in the fleet throughout 2008, will provide the retailer with significant emissions and fuel cost savings.

DHL Exel Supply Chain’s specialist Department Stores and Fashion team, jointly with DHL Central Engineering, have worked with TK Maxx to develop a solution that improves fuel economy on double deck trailers without compromising load capacity and without incurring the cost of new vehicle purchases. The two companies began to investigate how to make the trailers more aerodynamic and approached manufacturer Don-Bur to design and produce a prototype that met with these key objectives and could be implemented quickly and easily.

The unique streamlined shape of the air deflector designed by Don-Bur reduces the quantity of air being forced into the gap between the tractor and the trailer, minimizing turbulence and the resultant ‘drag force’ on the vehicle.

This is the latest initiative in a series of projects developed by TK Maxx and DHL, reflecting the contractual ‘green’ clause between both companies, which outlines their commitment to working together to meet key environmental goals
