European public postal operators show support to 2020 EU emissions target

PostEurop, the association of European public postal operators reiterates today its support to the 2020 EU emission target. 14 of its members have already agreed to an ambitious average 10pct reduction of their greenhouse gas emissions over the next five years and more PostEurop Members are expected to commit to the voluntary programme.

The European Commission has agreed this week on a package of proposals that will deliver the European Council’s commitments to fight climate change. The proposals demonstrate that the targets agreed last year are technologically and economically possible and provide a unique business opportunity for thousands of European companies. As agreed by its leaders in March 2007, the EU seeks to reduce greenhouse gases by at least 20 pct by 2020.

The postal sector in Europe, through the very nature of its activities, has an impact on the environment, mostly in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. Most of these CO2 emissions result from the use of road transport, aviation and building energy usage also contributing significantly.

There is however considerable scope for improvement and as a vital sector of the European economy, the postal sector is committed to providing an example, by working closely with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders in order to reduce the whole sector’s impact in Europe and worldwide.

Elaborated by PostEurop’s Environment Working Group under the authority of the Social Responsibility Committee, the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programme is fully in line with the Kyoto Protocol and the European Climate Change Programme targets. Its aim is to measure and assess the reduction efforts of participating postal operators and to create synergies by exchanging best practices in that field.

Correos to cut rural delivery service (Spain)

The Government has given Correos the permission to abandon deliveries to homes that are more than 250 metres from a main road

The Spanish post office, Correos, is to stop home deliveries in isolated areas. In a little publicised move, a decree from the Ministry for Development now allows Correos to cancel the delivery of letters and packages to homes where there is a low density of housing or to isolated homes.

Under the new regulations Correos will no longer be obliged to deliver to houses that are more than 250 metres from a main road.

The rural areas of Galicia are expected to be those most affected by the move. According to the 2001 census, some 445,000 people in the region could thus lose their postal delivery service. Correos suggests that in such areas the home owners collect their post from a community letter box which Correos will locate at a place decided in agreement with the local town hall and neighbourhood associations.

Postal union CIG is not happy. They say that in Galicia alone it means that 400 of the 1,200 postmen and women in the region are likely to lose their jobs, while the company insists that no jobs are to be cut.

Appellate Court declines FedEx Ground request to appeal (U.S.)

In a decision received today, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit declined to hear the request of FedEx Ground, an operating unit of FedEx Corp. for interlocutory review of the class certification decision in the Kansas case pending before the United States District Court in Indiana. The decision had granted class certification on the Kansas state claims and a national ERISA claim.

The court did not rule on the validity of the contractor model and has not decided class certification in any other multi-district litigation case. FedEx Ground will continue to vigorously defend the MDL.

This procedural ruling does not change any aspect of the FedEx Ground operation and we will continue to provide the world-class service our customers have come to expect.

TNT Launches New Morning Delivery Service

Adding a new time-guaranteed service – ’10:00 Express’ to the existing ‘9:00 Express’ and ’12:00 Express’ and ‘Express’ service, TNT puts a strong emphasis on morning deliveries and now offers more morning delivery services.

The ’10:00 Express’ provides customers with a genuine ‘first-thing’ service for organisations that don’t open until 9am, saving half-an-hour at the most important time of the day.

With the new offering, TNT recognises a universal customer need for guaranteed morning delivery, more choice of services and less complexity through service alignment.

Stuart Stobie, Divisional Managing Director, TNT Express UK, said: “We’re determined to ‘own the morning’ in the worldwide express delivery market by offering the widest range of delivery options of any carrier. This new ’10:00 Express’ service is crucial as very often time is the most precious commodity in business, and if we can give our customers more of it, we are on the road to success.

TNT conducted extensive research involving 7,500 express service users in key markets around the world. The results demonstrate that, apart from speed, weight and coverage capabilities, customers expect convenience, reliability and control from their provider of express services. TNT’s new range of services directly answers these requirements.

Drawing on TNT’s fully integrated air and road network infrastructure, the new service portfolio offers greater geographical coverage for deliveries by 9:00, 10:00 and 12:00 to more cities and business locations worldwide than before.
