GCC postal managements discuss pan-GCC Logistics Company and improved speed post

Postal managements of GCC countries reviewed the progress of the proposed pan-GCC logistics company and an improved Mumtaz (speed post) for the region, at the 19th Steering Committee meeting of Arab postal corporations held in Jeddah recently. The meeting discussed a report submitted by the task force looking into the modalities of setting up the logistics company. The meeting also discussed the progress on the standardization of purchase operations and sourcing of postal items in bulk, in addition to issues such as customs procedures, inspection and movements of parcels, more efficient electronic money transfer within GCC.

A high-level Emirates Post delegation led by Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General of Post, took part in the deliberations. Other members of the delegation were Mr. Salem Al Shaya, Assistant Director General, Operations, and Mr. Abdullah Al Fan, Assistant Director General, Development and Marketing.

The postal heads appointed a team to study ways of improving movements of parcels within the GCC and another one to prepare a common Arab agenda for the UPU Congress in Nairobi in 2008. The stressed the need for a consensus so that their demands could be incorporated in the Nairobi 2008 Postal Strategy.

The GCC postal officials also met HH Prince Khalid Al Faisal Bin Abdulaziz, Chief of Mecca region, who urged for shared expertise in efficient mail and transport services within GCC countries. The meeting also honoured past heads of GCC postal organizations and recalled their contribution to the development of postal services in their respective countries.

Austrian Post acquires City Express d.o.o. in Serbia

By taking over City Express d.o.o. in Belgrade, Austrian Post has entered the Serbian and Montenegrian parcel market and extended its presence in Central and South-Eastern Europe.

City Express, founded in 2002, will distribute over two million domestic shipments in 2007 with a total turnover of about 10 Mio EUR. This is equals 4 Mio door-to-door parcels and roughly for some 50 pct market share. With a headcount of 368 employees and a fleet of 248 vehicles, City Express is operating 14 sites in Serbia as well as a branch in the Republic of Montenegro.

„The takeover of City Express is following our expansion strategy in South-Eastern Europe. This step will unlock significant potentials for us, accessing the growth markets in Serbia and Montenegro”, says Anton Wais, CEO of Austrian Post.

Armadillo Group announces opening of 3 new branches

In the framework of ongoing regional expansion program Armadillo Group (DPD brand) has opened 3 new branches in a region of strategic importance.

New branches were opened in Siberian Region (in Irkutsk, Kemerovo and Surgut). FedEx is the new official courier service provider for the world’s leading watch and jewellery show, BASELWORLD. From 3-10 April 2008, the express courier company will offer exhibitors and visitors an extensive all-round courier service right on site.

TNT inaugurates international air route at Rennes

TNT Express has inaugurated a new international air route between Rennes in north-west France and its European air hub at Liège to improve service to customers in the Brittany region.

The service, which has been in operation since October, was officially inaugurated on November 15 in the presence of TNT Express France CEO Eric Jacquemet, representatives of the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and numerous customers. During his visit, Jacquemet underlined the very satisfying capacity utilization of the new route one month after the start, and highlighted the advantages of the service for customers in the region.

The route is operated five days a week by BAE146 QT or B737 freighters, with capacity to transport 10 tons of international parcels, documents and freight, TNT Express France said in a statement.

The late departure time of 22:50 offers exporters in Bretagne maximum flexibility with later pick-up times. On its way back, the plane from Liège arrives at Rennes at 06:10, offering optimal organisation of import deliveries throughout the whole region.

The new service complements the daily route that already exists between Rennes and Marseille for domestic shipments. In France, TNT Express has flights to and from six airports: Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Paris CDG, Toulouse and Rennes.
