Express Delivery under Pressure to Add More Value as Parcel Service Closes the Gap

Europe’s parcel and express delivery business is expected to continue to grow at a higher rate than in previous years due to an increase in business-to-consumer (B2C) traffic and strong international demand, according to new research by market analyst Datamonitor.

However, the research, “European Express Market Map 2008,” which covers 12 major European markets, says that although currently exhibiting a higher growth rate than parcel services, express services are going to have to demonstrate extra value as customer demand is shifting to using cheaper yet reliable parcel services in key growth areas of international and business-to-consumer (B2C) delivery services.

“Over the next five years, the B2C and C2C (consumer-to-consumer) sectors will experience faster growth than B2B (business-to-business), due to increased e-commerce activity, especially in less mature home delivery markets such as Italy and Spain,” said Erik van Baaren, Datamonitor express analyst and author of the study.

International services are also growing at a higher rate primarily due to the enlargement of the European Union and the trend to centralize operations to fewer countries and outsource manufacturing to low-cost countries, according to van Baaren.

Intec signs pan-European data mediation deal with DHL

Intec, a global provider of business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS), has successfully completed the first phase of a pan-European convergent data mediation project at DHL, an express and logistics company.

As part of a long term agreement signed this year with DHL s parent holding company, Deutsche Post World Net, Intec has entered the non-telecom data mediation market in Europe by delivering an integrated solution to DHL.

The project combines the Intec Mediation platform with Intec CEMS (Centralised Error Management System), providing the courier company with a unified platform that can gather, process and distribute its shipping records in real-time, while also checking and identifying information errors that could potentially lead to revenue losses.

Intec informed that the first phase of the project has successfully concluded with DHL s operations in Belgium going live with the platform in August 2007.

DHL plans to roll out Intec s combined mediation and error management system across twenty-four other European countries by the end of the year. The server hosting the mediation platform is based at DHL s IT centre in the Czech Republic.

Consultation Starts On Changes To Post Office Network – Post Office Ltd announces plans for Cardiff and Glamorgan Valleys

Post Office Ltd opened a six-week local public consultation on its Area Plan for the Cardiff and Glamorgan Valleys area. In line with the criteria and factors set by the UK Government in its Response Document (DTI The Post Office Network, Government response to public consultation May 2007 – www.dti.gov.uk/consultations/page36024.html), the Area Plan proposes future provision of Post Office services through a network of 153 branches across the area, resulting in the closure of 31 existing branches (see full list below).

Under the proposals, more than 99.7 pct of the area’s population will either see no change, or will remain within one mile (by road distance) of an alternative branch.

The detailed Area Plan proposal for Cardiff and Glamorgan Valleys area is now available from Post Office Ltd at: www.postoffice.co.uk/networkchange or by emailing: [email protected] or by writing to: Post Office Ltd, Freepost Consultation Team (no stamp required)

Post Office Ltd is now seeking views on the proposed future service provision in the area, in particular views on access to Post Office services, the accessibility of alternative branches to those proposed for closure. Consultation is due to end on December 10, 2007.

The UK Government has already undertaken a 12-week national consultation before reaching a decision to reduce the UK-wide network of Post Office branches by up to 2,500 from its current level of over 14,000, while continuing to provide funding (subject to EU state-aid clearance) to support a more sustainable network in the future. The proposals now published support the national accessibility criteria introduced by the UK Government.
