Deutsche Post CEO Zumwinkel Confirms 2007 Ebit Guidance

German mail and logistics company Deutsche Post AG at the weekend confirmed its 2007 guidance for earnings before interest and taxes, or Ebit, and despite the uncertain U.S. economy, still sees an increase possible this year.
Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel, who was visiting Moscow at the weekend, said he can confirm the outlook now the third quarter has ended; Ebit for 2007 is planned to reach EUR3.6 billion from EUR3.5 billion a year earlier.
Zumwinkel reiterated that it is possible the company will increase its guidance. This was mentioned earlier in the year after the Bonn-based, DAX company delivered its half-year results.
Deutsche Post’s unit Express, like its peers United Parcel Services Inc. (UPS) and FedEX Corp. (FDX) faces a weak U.S. market, said the CEO.
The CEO also confirmed this year’s guidance for the company’s business segments. Express will reach an Ebit of at least EUR400 million, while logistics could reach operating profit of around EUR900 million.
The medium-term goal for the business in the Americas has not been lowered, and Deutsche Post still plans to reach break-even by the end of 2009 in the Americas, he said.
In 2003, Deutsche Post acquired U.S. Express postal service Airborne. After this takeover, the company incurred losses that are valued in the three-digit million euro range. The company said it would break-even on two occasions, but is still to do so.
The CEO has replied to criticism surrounding the losses by saying it is inevitable for a conglomerate with international customers, like Deutsche Post, to do business in the U.S.

Belgian Post to merge parcel, express subsidiaries

Belgian Post announced yesterday it will merge its two subsidiaries Taxipost and Kilopost into a new merged division to be called “Parcels & Express” to cut costs and enhance its services. The future business will operate under the Taxipost brand.

The express unit Taxipost has succeeded in increasing volumes and revenues but has not achieved a financial breakeven in a tough competitive environment, the postal group said in a statement.

Belgian Post said it has therefore decided to merge Taxipost with the parcels unit Kilopost into a new merged division to be called “Parcels & Express” under the management of Eric Piers.

The Taxipost depots will be integrated into the Belgian Post mail division during the first half of 2008 and its contracts will be transferred to the parent group. The mail division will be responsible for handling and delivering all parcels. Belgian Post aims to complete the restructuring by mid-2008.

Belgian Post managing director Johnny Thijs said the restructuring was designed to enable the postal group to achieve its “major ambitions” in the parcels sector, to increase its market share and to reduce cost levels.

The two units had combined volumes of 25 million parcels in 2006. Taxipost increased its express volumes by 22 pct in the first half of 2007.

DHL Express Bahrain head moves to Saudi

DHL Express Bahrain yesterday announced the redeployment of its top brass to boost operations in the Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

Nour Suliman, its Bahrain Country Manager for six years with 29 years experience with the express and logistics provider, has been made the Country Manager for its operations in Saudi Arabia.

Mark Benton, DHL’s Country Manager for Oman, replaces Nour Suliman at DHL Express Bahrain. Mark has been with DHL since 2000 when he joined DHL Express New Zealand as National Operations Manager. After three years, Mark moved to SNAS/DHL Saudi Arabia as National Operations Manager based in Al Khobar. In April 2006, he was given the Oman posting.

Suliman and Benton’s promotions come as part of DHL’s continuous plan for expanding and growing the business in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, said Dave Spargo, Regional Area Director for DHL Middle East. Saudi Arabia is considered the biggest logistics market in the Middle East, and Bahrain is strategically important, as the location for the company’s regional hub, as well as a local market continuing to offer growth in the express freight and logistics business.
