New challengers set to blow European road express apart

New players are set to seriously challenge the big global integrators in the fast-growing European international road express market. They will include national parcel operators and freight forwarders.

That was one of the arguments put forward at this month’s World Mail ‘ Express Europe conference in Brussels. However, industry observers questioned that suggestion, asking where the new market entrants would come. They also pointed out that both groups of potential additional competitors had tried in the past to move into that sector without success.

Opening the debate, German express, parcel and transport industry journalist and consultant Ludwig-Michael Cremer argued that the European international express market was set to see further segmentation between air and road-based operations. TNT already had fully separate pan-European air and road networks, he said, and DHL and UPS were set to follow. FedEx was currently focused on air express and might need to find a partner to develop the equivalent of its FedEx Ground operation in the US.

Italy IPOST Surplus At EUR 22 Mln 2004

Italian Postal and Telecommunications Services Institute (IPOST), the social security institute for Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane staff, registered a surplus of 22 mln euro (USD27. 7 mln) in 2004, it was reported on May 18, 2005.

In 2004, managed funds of IPOST stood at 2. 297 bln euro (USD2. 896 bln), while cash in hand totalled 1. 315 bln euro (USD1. 658 bln) at the end of December 2004, of which 1. 195 bln euro (USD1. 507) in the accounts of the State Treasury.

Net worth of IPOST stood at 2. 57 bln euro (USD3. 24 bln). No comparative figures were available.

Poste Italiane top officers likely to be re-elected

The top officers of Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane should be put to the vote, Communications Minister, Mario Landolfi, said. Answering a question about possible new nominations at Poste Italiane top managerial positions, Landolfi said most probably the current executives will be re-elected. The reshuffle of Poste Italiane’s management team is to be made by May 25, 2005, the minister added.

Italian state-owned postal services company Poste Italiane and local leasing company Banca Italease SpA launched on May 10, 2005, the joint service Leasing BancoPosta. Leasing BancoPosta is intended for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), traders and freelancers. They can apply for a financing of up to 150, 000 euro (USD 192, 795) for real estate and capital goods purchases.

TNT Logistics and Italian RCS Libri extend contract

TNT Logistics, a unit of Dutch mail, express and logistics company TNT NV, has renewed its contract for the outsourcing of logistics activities with Italian publisher RCS Libri for six years. Under the terms of the contract, TNT Logistics will provide RCS Libri with storage and distribution services for books, ensuring the launch of new initiatives across the country, guaranteeing the distribution of stocks to bookshops and secondary warehouses, and taking responsibility for the collection and management of returned unsold copies of general and scholastic books published by RCS Libri.
