Postal transformation, Italian style

In the late 1990s, the Italian post office found itself in a situation that many of its European counterparts knew all too well: The Internet and private couriers had transformed many postal activities into fully contestable markets. To make matters worse, the quality of Italian postal services was poor, public confidence in mail had suffered, and operating losses were nothing unusual.

If the post office was to remain an important part of Italy’s — and Europe’s — economic and communications landscape, a radical transformation clearly would be needed. Cost-cutting alone wouldn’t be enough. The quality, scope and cost-efficiency of mailing services had to improve.

Palletways Italia hub moves south

Palletways has moved the central hub of its Italian operation from Verona to Bologna to extend the reach of its overnight services and provide room for growth.

The Lichfield-based company, which pioneered pallet networks in Italy in 2001, said it needed to accomodate “phenomenal” levels of growth that saw volumes in Italy doubling over the past year.

The move to Bologna – the logistics centre of Italy – would enable Palletways Italia to extend its premium next-day services further south.

DHL Italy want to be an elephant that can dance

Palletways expanding into Bologna

Palletways Italia has relocated its central hub in Verona further south to Bologna, the logistics centre of the contry, to accommodate a 50% growth in operations last year. The dedicated hub has 6,510 sqm of warehousing, a two storey office block and has room for future expansion.
