“We Want Fair Competition”: Yamato Criticizes Japan Post in Ad

“We want fair competition,” Yamato Transport Co. said in a full-page opinion advertising published on the nation’s 38 newspapers Thursday, criticizing Japan Post, a public corporation, for its plan to join hands with a major convenience store chain in the parcel delivery service. Yamato Transport, known for its “Kuroneko Yamato” parcel delivery service with a logo of black cats, earlier this month lost an important business contract with the convenience store chain, Lawson Inc., because of Japan Post. Lawson on Aug. 17 notified Yamato Transport of the cancellation of its contract with Yamato Transport, as it decided to start handling parcels on behalf of Japan Post nationwide in mid-November.

Japan Post to Beef Up Ties with Chinese Post Agency

Japan Post said Tuesday it has agreed to step up cooperation with China’s State Postal Bureau to speed up express mail deliveries between the two countries.
With the move, Japan Post aims to overtake U.S. giant FedEx Corp. and Deutsche Post AG’s DHL International Ltd., both major players in China. To strengthen international express delivery services, the two sides will discuss raising the weight limit of parcels, currently set at 30 kilograms. They will also exchange ideas on how to speed up customs-clearing processes and whether to expand the scope of their delivery time guarantees.

Warning over Japan post office ‘monster’ privatisation plans

The privatisation of Japan’s post office, the biggest financial institution in the world, threatens to “unleash a monster” that will compete unfairly against private businesses in banking, insurance and postal delivery services, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan said yesterday. Ending the public status of the post office, which employs 280,000 staff and controls assets of about Y400,000bn (Dollars 3,600bn, Euros 3,000bn, Pounds 2,000bn), is the central plank of market-led reforms being pushed by Junichiro Koizumi, prime minister, in what is expected to be his final two years of office. The privatisation, a priority for Mr Koizumi for 20 years, is due to take place over a decade from April 2007 in a process that could profoundly influence Japan’s financial system. US business and some domestic banks, insurers and parcel companies are concerned that, during the transition period, the post office will be allowed to keep privileges associated with a state monopoly.

Yamato Transport Calls for Downsized Japanese Public Parcel Service

Japan should downsize the public parcel delivery service run by Japan Post, Yamato Transport Co. President Atsushi Yamazaki said Monday. On the planned privatization of the “Yucho” postal savings and other operations, the government should place more priority on the benefits for the whole of the nation instead of on maintaining the jobs of Japan Post’s 270,000 employees, Yamazaki said in an interview with Jiji Press.

Japan no longer needs a public sector role in parcel delivery services, he said, urging the government-owned corporation to at least trim its parcel delivery service.

Yamato Transport chief blasts Japan Post’s tie-up with Lawson

Yamato Transport Co. President Atsushi Yamazaki lashed out at Japan Post on Friday for joining hands with Lawson Inc. to offer a parcel delivery service, saying private-sector rivals will be at a disadvantage competing with the public entity.

“It is not fair for us to compete on the same playing field as the public corporation, which receives favorable treatment of various kinds in such areas as taxation,” Yamazaki said in an interview with Kyodo News.

Yamato, Japan’s largest door-to-door parcel delivery service company, decided to end its business alliance with Lawson when its current contract expires after the convenience store operator said last week it will begin handling Japan Post parcels at its 7,850 outlets nationwide in mid-November.
