Japan Post logs huge profit for 1st year

Japan Post has said that it logged a huge consolidated profit for its first year, which ended March 31.

Its group net profit came to 2,302 billion yen and recurring profit to 2,621.2 billion yen on operating revenue of 24,713.6 billion yen. By sector, the postal service generated a net profit of 27.6 billion yen. Postwatch visit to Japan Post

As a part of its research activities Postwatch conducts a number of international visits. Such visits enable us to learn from best practice elsewhere, share information and develop an understanding of trends worldwide.
Trends in the Japanese postal industry to a significant extent mirror those in the UK. Its main postal operator has recently been made into a public corporation, and public opinion is greatly opposed to the closure of post offices and the prospect of privatisation, although this remains high up on the Prime Minister’s agenda. It was therefore felt that Postwatch would benefit from meeting with Japan Post and the Ministry for Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications (MPHPT) to establish how Japan Post and the regulator are approaching some of the challenges we are also facing at home.

Japan Post would need to pay a total of 533 billion yen a year in national and local taxes when it is privatized, according to the postal service entity’s estimate obtained by Kyodo News on Monday. The total includes 211.9 billion yen in corporate income tax, 112.2 billion yen in enterprise tax and 59.1 billion yen in fixed asset tax. Japan Post was created in April 2003 to take over three postal services — mail delivery, postal savings and life insurance — from the government’s Postal Services Agency. The Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, a key government economic advisory panel, is calling for Japan Post to be privatized in five to 10 years from 2007. As a public entity, Japan Post is not required to pay taxes at present.
