Japanese Nippon Express hoping to start special mail delivery service

Major transport company Nippon Express Co. plans to launch a special mail delivery service, possibly within 2004, informed sources said.

The company has already submitted an application for a business license to the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications, which may approve it.

Nippon Express would become the first major transport firm to begin special mail deliveries since April last year when the government allowed private firms to handle mail delivery on certain conditions, including delivery within three hours.

Japan Post to launch easier overseas mail

Improved Express Mail Service (EMS) in the nation’s four major conurbations featuring enhanced user-friendliness and lower stamp costs, the public corporation said. ‘There is no reason whatsoever to revise the price control system which worked well in the past and led to extremely low postal rates for the consumer… Over a period of twelve years, corrected for inflation, the price of a postage stamp has decreased by 30 pct.’

Japan Post’s Ikuta rejects call for abolition of postal savings

Japan Post President Masaharu Ikuta has rejected calls from the Japanese Bankers Association for the abolition of the postal savings system, saying the system is indispensable for maintaining the nationwide postal network.

“Eighty percent of ‘tokutei’ post offices do not conduct mail delivery and they rely on postal savings and ‘kampo’ (life insurance) for most of their revenue,” Ikuta said.

“The postal network can no longer exist if postal savings are abolished,” he said.

UPS Express operations in Japan to become wholly-owned

UPS has announced it will acquire the minority shareholding of its joint-venture partner in Japan, Yamato Transport Co. Effective April 1, 2004, the joint-venture company, UPS Yamato Express Co. will become a wholly-owned company of UPS.

“As the world’s second largest economy, Japan is a very important market for UPS,” said Ken Torok, president of UPS Asia Pacific. “The wholly-owned company will strengthen our express operation and complement our existing global distribution and logistics capabilities.”

UPS to buy out Japanese Yamato Express stake

United Parcel Service Inc has reached an agreement to buy out Yamato Transport Co, Japan’s largest door-to-door parcel delivery service, from their Japan joint venture, as the US firm moves to develop its own delivery network.

UPS will buy Yamato’s 49 pct stake in UPS Yamato Express Co by the end of March at an undisclosed price, turning the joint venture into a wholly owned subsidiary.
