Japan's Mail delivery unprofitable in most regions

Japan’s Mail delivery services were profitable in only two service regions in Japan in fiscal 2000-2002 and unprofitable in the remaining 10 for each year of the three-year period, government sources said Thursday in reference to an estimate by the posts ministry.

The profitable blocks were Tokyo and Kanto, the region surrounding the nation’s capital.

TPG completes buy out of Jepsen unaddressed mail network in Germany

Mail, express and logistics company, TPG N.V., through its subsidiary TPG Post Holdings (Deutschland) GmbH in Germany, has purchased the remaining 49% of shares in Olaf Jepsen GmbH (Jepsen). TPG Post had already acquired 51% of the shares in 1998.

Jepsen, which generated revenues of around €29 million in 2002, is a key part of the total TPG Post unaddressed mail network in Germany. The company delivers 956 million items such as leaflets and newspapers each year.

Japan Post to install mailboxes in C&S stores

Japan Post, in a move aimed at boosting its parcel post business, has reached an agreement with C&S Co. to place mailboxes within the Circle K and Sunkus convenience stores that C&S operates.

This follows the postal service’s alliance with major convenience store operator Lawson Inc.

Mailboxes will be installed at 1,394 of C&S’s 6,000 stores in the four prefectures of Aichi, Gifu, Shizuoka and Mie, and mail will be accepted starting Monday 15th December. Lawson already has mailboxes in all of its 7,700 stores.

Express Air Mail service launched between China, Japan

A new express mail service (EMS) by air has been launched between Shanghai in eastern China and Osaka in Japan, a breakthrough for mail transport between the two nations.

The mail flight is jointly operated by Southern China Airlines (SCA), based in south Guangdong Province, and the Shanghai-based China Post airlines, a joint effort of China Post and SCA.

Japan Post privatisation panel to discuss regional separation

A government panel has decided to discuss new business models for Japan’s postal services, including the idea of dividing them by region, in view of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s plan to soon privatize the services.

The liaison council on postal privatization, which consists of officials from the Cabinet Office and the posts ministry and private-sector experts, discussed the goals and merits of bringing the postal services into private hands, government officials said.
