Nippon Express launches U.S. domestic service

Nippon Express, one of the world’s biggest international freight forwarders, has launched a domestic air and truck service to select U.S. cities. The service is initially available from Seattle and Portland to Chicago and other Midwest destinations and New York. Nippon said it will gradually expand the list of destinations it serves. The Japan-based forwarder said it’s offering three service levels – next-day, second-day and deferred. It also provides pick-ups and door-to-door delivery. Nippon launched the service late last month.

Japan Post tries Toyota system

Japan Post, a public corporation created in April to take over the Postal Services Agency’s postal, savings and life insurance services, has been trying to introduce a production management system used by the Toyota group to streamline the postal services.

However, the system has yet to result in an ideal post office, and some employees are perplexed by the new system. It remains to be seen whether the system will be effective as a method of postal reform.

This autumn, Japan Post distributed to its branch offices 200-page manuals describing how Koshigaya Post Office in Koshigaya, Saitama Prefecture, had introduced the Toyota-style system, known as the kanban, or just-in-time inventory system.

DHL to handle Hitachi's global shipments

Hitachi Ltd. will contract integrated logistics company DHL Japan Inc. to ship audiovisual equipment direct from the factory to customers.

The move is in support of a new Hitachi shipping system designed to reduce inventory.

The system will be implemented in April 2004 solely for shipments of liquid-crystal display projectors to Europe. Hitachi will broaden the system to include all audiovisual products in every global market by March 2006.

FedEx plans direct flights to new Japan airport

FedEx Corp may operate direct flights between the US and the new international airport, off the coast of Aichi prefecture, in central Japan, when it opens in 2005.

FedEx aims to win business related to Expo 2005 Aichi, and meet growing demand for cargo transported via Japan to China, said Michael Ducker, executive vice-president in charge of international operations.

DHL China to surpass Japan in two years

China will eclipse Japan in two years as the largest market in Asia for express mail giant DHL, the company said.

The company’s business in China is growing by about 40% each year, said John Mullen, chief executive officer in Asia.

In the next 12 months, it plans to add 1,000 more employees to its staff of 3,800 in express services in China, Mullen said. DHL’s shipping unit plans to expand its China workforce of 380 by 40%, he added.
