Deutsche Post Steps Up Investments in Asia

German postal and logistics giant Deutsche Post AG plans to expand its position in Asia.

Deutsche Post chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel, speaking during a visit to Japan, said that parcel-express service DHL and logistics service provider Danzas will be at the center of these plans. “Asia is, for us, a growth market to which we are paying a great deal of attention,” he said. The group had particularly high expectations of opportunities on the Chinese market, he added.

Koizumi vows to privatize

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reiterated his determination Tuesday to privatize Japan’s postal services as the Diet began deliberations on a package of four government-sponsored bills on the issue.
The House of Representatives started debate on bills to allow private firms to begin offering mail services and to establish a new public corporation in 2003 to take over the three state-run postal services — mail, postal savings and “kampo” life insurance.
Koizumi told the lower house plenary session that allowing private firms into the industry would be “a milestone toward the eventual privatization” of the three postal services.

Nonaka threatens to drop support

Hiromu Nonaka, an influential politician in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), on Tuesday openly expressed his displeasure at Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s remarks Monday on the privatization of postal services, threatening to drop his support for a package of bills on the issue.
“I thought those bills should pass the Diet to ensure the smooth launch of a (planned) public postal corporation, but now that the prime minister said such a thing, maybe I should reconsider it,” Nonaka told reporters.

Japan’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is considering excluding credit cards and certain direct mail from the definition of ‘postal mail,’ a move that would open the way for the entry of private companies into such delivery operations, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Saturday-morning edition, citing government sources.

Koizumi to send team to Germany

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi proposed Monday to send a Japanese team to a German postal firm to observe privatized postal services. The proposal is apparently intended ultimately to help create a more favorable mood for the privatization of Japanese postal services, one of the premier’s pet projects.
