Japan Post to Own 66 Pct of Parcel Delivery JV with Nippon Express

Japan Post Holdings Co. and Nippon Express Co. will own 66 pct and 34 pct, respectively, of their parcel delivery joint firm, the two companies announced.

The current fifty-fifty joint venture, JP Express Co., was set up in Tokyo in June to prepare for the integration of the two companies’ parcel delivery operations on April 1 next year.

The two also agreed to raise the capital of JP Express to 50 billion yen by April from the current 300 million yen.

The new firm will target sales of 280 billion yen in the year starting April and expects to handle some 520 million parcels.

It is targeting a domestic market share of 16 pct, the largest after Yamato Transport Co. and Sagawa Express Co.

It will have a workforce of 11,000, mostly on loan from Japan Post and Nippon Express, and 260,000 service outlets nationwide, including those at convenience stores.

The firm will also launch a new brand to replace Japan Post’s “Yu-Pack” and Nippon Express’ “Pelican” brands.

Japan and France to jointly offer logistics services

Japan Post Service Co., a mail delivery unit of Japan Post Holdings Co., said it will collaborate with French postal service operator La Poste in strengthening its international logistics businesses.

Starting in October, the two will offer distribution services between Japan and Europe using the networks of their respective logistics units.

Japan Post Service Chairman Norio Kitamura and La Poste Chairman Jean-Paul Bailly reached an agreement on the three-year tie-up, which is effective until 2011, at their meeting in Paris last Tuesday 29th July.

The two companies have so far exchanged information on postal services and personnel. It is the first time for the two to work together.

Japan Post Sankyu Global Logistics Co., a joint venture between Japan Post Service and major logistics service provider Sankyu Inc. and GeoPost, affiliated with La Poste, will take charge of the joint services of large-lot transportation of small cargo shipments between businesses and inventory control for corporate customers.

Express Mail Service from France to Japan, which has been suspended since 1991, will be resumed next year to boost transactions between the two countries.

The Japanese and French postal service operators will also jointly study ways to effectively use electric vehicles in their operations.

International Freight Industry to shift from air transport to sea and rail

Australia Post’s Managing Director, Graeme John, foresees cutbacks on flights and a shift towards sea and rail deliveries with regard to the annual meeting of the Kahala Posts Group last week.

John said that growth in international freight from consumer goods such as electronics had been managed on a “just in time” basis, with air delivery preferred to other means of transport due to its speed advantage. But that approach was no longer viable as global warming would have an enormous influence on the postal industry worldwide increasing the pressure to shift towards less environmentally-damaging modes of delivery.

The Kahala Posts Group (KPG) which is the alliance of nine national postal administrations in Australia, the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Spain, France and Britain, was founded five years ago and named after a resort the members stayed at during their founding meeting in Hawaii. The postal operators have since launched an upgraded, guarantee-based international service between their respective countries and territories.

Therefore, Kahala Group focused instead on reliability of delivery. But to keep the reliability of the service, the Kahala members had to upgrade their tracking systems. It also required the creation of a “delivery calculator”, a database of eight billion postcodes that allows a customer to walk into any postal outlet, list their destination and be told a precise time window during which a parcel would be delivered, Brisbane Times further reported.

While the private couriers already offered that service and faster delivery, the Kahala members undercut their prices by 40 pct to 50 pct to stay competitive in price.

John further said that a worsening economic environment could prompt a trend to slower “deferred” delivery services.

The Kahala partnership is also moving beyond postage, with Australia Post, China Post and the US Postal Service preparing to launch a group-owned money transfer service to compete against Western Union, Brisbane Times added.
