Japan Post plans service expansion after privatization

Japan Post Corp. submitted to the government on Monday [31 July] outlines of its 10-year postal privatization road map that includes plans to have its postal savings bank provide loans to individuals and its postal life insurance firm offer health and casualty insurance policies.

The postal savings bank will have 232 outlets while the postal insurance company will operate 81 outlets, and both will offer their services also at the postal group’s network of 24,000 post offices across the nation, the outlines show.

Japan Post's operations to be expanded after privatization

A new bank and insurance company, to be created through Japan’s postal privatization next year, will try to expand their operations to match those of their private-sector rivals, informed sources said Friday.

According to the outlines of their business plans, Yucho (postal savings) Bank and Kampo Life Insurance will eliminate or raise the 10 million yen ceiling per depositor and policyholder currently set for money to be put into postal savings and postal life insurance, the sources said.

The bank will also seek to extend loans to individuals in addition to small and midsize enterprises, and the insurance firm plans to start offering medical insurance products, the sources said.

Yucho’s and Kampo’s assets will total around 226 trillion yen and 114 trillion yen, respectively, surpassing those of the two leading companies in the industries — Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. and Nippon Life Insurance Co., the sources said.

Nippon Express Malaysia Sdn Bhd has been named Best IT/Electronics Logistics Service Provider in Malaysia by Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company.

The award was conferred to Nippon Express Malaysia recently at the 2006 Frost & Sullivan ASEAN 4 Logistics Awards based on a Voice of the Customer research, which was officiated by Mr. Ko Kheng Hwa, Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board.

Frost & Sullivan Director of Transportation, Asia Pacific Kavan Mukhtyar says Nippon Express has emerged as the winner among the logistics service providers in the Malaysian IT/Electronics sector, as it secured the highest ratings for its service performance and capability from its own customers in the sector.

Heads from six postal services gather

Senior executives from six postal administrations in the Asia-Pacific region will today wrap up their three-day meeting held at Seoul’s Shilla Hotel, the meeting’s organizer Korea Post said yesterday.
Participants of the fourth annual Kahala Posts Group CEO/BOD Joint Meetings discussed the current status and future prospects of “express mail services,” or EMS, and the implementation of the Kahala Initiative, the state-run postal service said.

Participants include Tam Wing-pong, postmaster general of Hong Kong Post; Toshihiro Takahashi, senior executive vice president for Japan Post; Hwang Joong-yon, inspector general of Korea Post; Ma Jun Sheng, vice director-general of the Chinese State Postal Bureau; Graeme John, managing director of Australia Post; and Paul Vogel, vice president for network operations management in the U.S. Postal Service. Adam Crozier of the U.K.’s Royal Mail, which will soon likely join the Kahala membership, also attended the meeting.

The Kahala Initiative refers to an integrated postal service network among six member countries including Korea, the United States, Japan, China, Australia and Hong Kong, to enhance the quality and competitiveness of EMS.

Japan Post, JR East eye cash card with Suica functions

Japan Post is talking with East Japan Railway Co. about a plan to issue a cash card with the electronic money and prepaid train ticket functions of JR East’s Suica smart card, it was learned Thursday.

Japan Post, which operates the Yucho savings service, and the major railroad are considering launching the new card as early as next spring, sources said.
