Japan Post in mail distribution talks with TNT, Nippon Express, Sankyu

TNT NV is a candidate to set up a mail distribution company with Japan Post, Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

According to sources, Japan Post is eyeing several candidates at home and abroad to set up goods distribution companies. Currently, Japanese law effectively prevents local mail companies from teaming up with foreign partners.

Other candidates mentioned by the paper are Nippon Express and Nippon Steel Corp’s Sankyu Inc affiliate.

TNT was not immediately available for comment.

Japan Post eyeing tie-ups for international distribution of goods

Japan Post is nearing the final stage of negotiations on comprehensive tie-ups with several major distribution companies such as TNT Post Group of the Netherlands and Japan’s major delivery company Nippon Express Co., a news report said Wednesday. The company wants the tie-ups, expected to be concluded by the end of the year, so it can set up joint firms to distribute goods for companies and gain a foothold in Asia, the largest daily Yomiuri Shimbun said.
Under the current law, Japan Post can only transfer international mail it receives in Japan to a postal service operator in another country. But the company wants to expand its services to better respond to the demands from domestic companies, such as speedy delivery, the paper said.

Guaranteed expedited delivery from US to Pacific Rim now open to businesses

Business mailers can now benefit by using a date-certain, guaranteed delivery service to the Pacific Rim utilizing the cooperative efforts of the US Postal Service and five other world posts. Global Express Mail service with guarantee, which became available to non commercial mailers on July 25, 2005, was launched in an historic agreement among postal administrations for Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, and the Republic of South Korea. The introduction of this guarantee feature was an enhancement to the existing Global Express Mail service and was available, until now, to non commercial mailers only. “Global Express Mail with guarantee is an ideal solution for business mailers,” said Jim Wade, vice president of international business for the U.S. Postal Service. “It can help these commercial shippers conduct transactions in the Pacific Rim, an arena which continues to experience unprecedented growth in international trade,” he added.

Koizumi’s key reform project passed the lower house in a plenary session by 338 to 138 votes, an expected result with the ruling coalition of LDP and the New Komeito party holding more than two-thirds of the seats in the lower house. The upper house is expected to approve the legislation Friday.
