22.7 percent want Japan Post privatisation during current Diet session

Only 22.7 percent of Japanese people polled want the government to legislate a set of bills for privatising Japan Post, the state-run postal services provider, during the current Diet session, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday.

The poll found that 53.9 percent of the responding eligible voters in the nationwide telephone survey conducted Saturday and Sunday believe the government should have extensive discussions over the privatisation without sticking to enactment during the current session to June 19.

The poll was conducted on 1,471 households, with valid responses received from 1,015.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has long characterized Japan Post privatisation as the focal point of his reform programs.

Japan Post gaining partners for parcel delivery service

Ministop Co. announced on March 1 that it will begin handling Japan Post's Yu-Pack parcel delivery service at its 1,684 convenience stores, becoming the second convenience-store operator to do so following Lawson Inc.

By signing up Ministop to handle the Yu-Pack drop-off service at all locations, Japan Post has succeeded in converting another convenience store operator that had been doing business with parcel delivery pioneer Yamato Transport Co.

Ministop currently conducts a similar service for Yamato, but it is expected to switch to Yu-Pack because the leading door-to-door parcel delivery firm does not allow Ministop and other business partners to offer rival services.

Japan Post to earn 300-900 bln yen by 2021

The four new entities that would be set up after the privatization of Japan Post in April 2007 will likely be earning a total annual pretax profit of 300-900 billion yen after 2017 when the transitional period is completed, according to government estimates. In estimating how much money privatized postal operations would make in new businesses, such as international shipping or stock brokering at post offices, the government assigned different degrees of achievement. If none of the new businesses has any success, the government estimated that the total annual pretax profit for the four firms would average 300 billion yen through 2021. If the entry into new businesses is only 50% successful, the government estimated the figure would reach 600 billion yen, reaching 900 billion yen if total success is achieved.
