EU examines complaint over govt aid to Belgian postal service

The European Commission said it is examining a complaint made by several newspaper suppliers over alleged state aid earmarked by the government for a new distribution system set up by Belgium’s postal service. ‘We are examining this complaint to see whether we will open an in-depth inquiry,’ said a spokesman for EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes. The news confirms reports in financial daily De Tijd. According to the newspaper, Belgium’s postal service secured an agreement with the government and newspaper editors in April 2004 to distribute newspapers before 8.30 am CET from the start of 2006.

Speos Belgium Buys IT Firm Secumail

Document management company Speos Belgium SA, part of Belgian postal service company De Post/La Poste, has acquired IT firm Secumail, Speos said. The deal was concluded at the end of November 2005 but announced on January 4, 2006.
Following the transaction Secumail is still 24-pct owned by German paper management systems manufacturer Boewe Systec Benelux. The acquisition of Secumail is in line with Speos’ strategy to focus on document management solutions.

EU clears Post Danmark, CVC to buy stake in Belgian postal service

Denmark’s national postal service, Post Danmark A/S, won EU regulatory approval Tuesday for its plans to buy a 49 percent stake in Belgium’s La Poste-De Post.
Post Danmark and its minority shareholder CVC Capital Partners are paying the Belgian state EUR300 million (USD361 million) and will help modernize the service. Belgium will keep the remaining 51 percent of the shares in the country’s postal service and the company will remain headquartered in Brussels.

Belgian PostPunten number up to 130 in 2006

Belgian postal service company De Post/La Poste will increase the number of its PostPunten sales counters to some 130 in 2006, the De Staandard daily said on December 15, 2005. De Post/La Poste plans to install the sales counters in supermarkets, newspaper retail stores, banks and train stations. The company installed the first string of 14 PostPunten in November 2004. The number was later raised to 46.

Three out of four Belgians prefer paper mail

Three out of fours Belgians still prefer paper mail to email, a survey of the Belgian research bureau M.A.S, ordered by the Belgian postal service company De Post/La Poste, showed on November 18, 2005. The results of the survey showed that paper mail has a future, CEO of the Belgian postal company, Johnny Thijs, said. According to the survey, only 61 pct of the Belgians under 34 years preferred paper mail, while 84 pct of the surveyed aged over 55 years admitted they preferred paper mail. Eight of ten Belgians said they preferred to receive their bills and administrative documents on paper. Two of three surveyed said they hurried to open their mail box and experience the reading of the mail as a pleasant moment.
