Belgian postal workers staged a 24-hour strike Wednesday, protesting understaffing and job security. Workers started their strike late Tuesday, shutting down sorting centers across the country, ensuring no mail delivery.
Unions are angry after their employer, “De Post-La Poste” retracted a decision to cut working hours from 38 to 36, without hiring additional staff. The unions now want compensation for the retraction, including more holidays.
Arvato Services, the international media supplier takes back Vicindo the direct marketing subsidiary of La Poste. These two companies reached an agreement regarding the settlement which will be submitted, to the competent authorities in charge of competition. Vicindo is active in different fields within direct marketing such as: sale and location, development and management, together with production and direct marketing campaign. The company, whose offices are based in Malines and Kontich employs about 200 people.

The volume of mail sent in Belgium has dropped by 200 million units over the last two years, it emerged on Monday. The drastic fall in mail delivery is a result of the recent economic situation and the rise in emails and text messages, reported De Standaard and Het Volk. Classical mail delivery accounts for 81 percent of postal service business. The financial blow to the postal service has been softened by a rise in prices.
