French post office staff to elect board representatives today

Employees of the French post office, La Poste, will today elect a total of seven representatives to the organisation’s board of directors for a five-year term. The successful candidates, drawn from a list presented by La Poste’s unions, will be announced on Friday. Then, on December 19, the newly-elected board will vote for a chairman.

Italian and French post offices in financial-services venture

The Italian post office, Poste Italiane, and its French equivalent, La Poste, will jointly launch a mutual investment fund on Monday. From that day, customers of the two networks will be able to subscribe to the eight-year fund when they take out a life insurance policy with either Posta Vita in Italy or Services Financiers in France.

GeoPost UK challenges Royal Mail with two-day mailplus service

GeoPost UK has become the latest firm to challenge Royal Mail’s bulk mailing service, with its new operation, mailplus. The service, which the firm claims is up to 10% cheaper than Royal Mail’s Mailsort 2, is for mailings of more than 4,000 items. “It will also has the same kind of sortation levels as Mailsort, so there are 120, 700 and 1,200 services,” said mailplus general manager Jon Wilkins. “As a result, it’s very easy for users to switch.” Smethwick, West Midlands-based mailplus’ two-day offering sits between first and second class.
Mailplus uses sister firm Parceline’s network of 1,704 vehicles to collect pre-sorted mail and take it to Parceline’s West Midlands “superhub”. It is automatically sorted and then delivered to one of the Royal Mail’s 69 delivery centres around the UK for “final mile” delivery, enabling it to offer 100% UK coverage.

French post office considers Sunday opening

Jean-Paul Bailly, chairman of La Poste, the French post office, has told the French press that new opening hours for post offices will be introduced on a trial basis in 2006. The tests will include Sunday openings to coincide with Sunday morning markets and festivals, and keeping post offices open until 8pm one night a week.
