GeoPost/DPD – multi million investments

The French mall service provider La Poste wants to invest up to EUR 1 billion in the global expansion of its parcel subsidiary GeoPost, which operates under the brand name DPD. A competitive global network for international parcel services is to be created by take-overs, joint ventures and cooperations. The man is forcing the pace. Claude Béglé, CEO of GeoPost International Management & Development GmbH, lists the targets for GeoPost and DPD for 2005 in one quick breath. The most important ones are: to promote strong growth of sales and earnings, the introduction of a new core product for Europe, the expansion of warehouse capacities in the hub and above all the rapid intercontinental enhancement of the DPD network. The bill for the additional expansion in Europe and the remainder of the world could cost as much as EUR 1 billion in the coming years, said the Swiss national at a press conference in Frankfurt am Main (Germany).

La Poste faces rough ride as it looks to compete in new EU

The run-up to the French referendum on Europe’s new constitution promises to be a busy time for La Poste.

Not only is France’s state-owned post office preparing to deliver 43m copies of the constitution to voters before they go to the polls on May 29, but at the same time parliament will be voting on a law designed to allow La Poste to compete in Europe’s liberalised postal markets.

Some executives fear the May 12 vote, which is likely to trigger a fresh political debate on the future of the post office, could be hijacked by those advocating a No vote in the referendum.

So while the new business is welcome in the short term, the intense focus the referendum may bring on La Poste’s future could be more of a burden.

French postal reform bill returns to Lower House

The French lower house, the national assembly, will today begin a second reading of the bill which aims to reform France’s postal services. The proposed legislation, which was debated by the French senate in January, seeks to open up the French postal sector to competition. While many of its provisions have already been approved by both houses, the national assembly’s economic affairs commission has tabled an amendment which would limit the powers of Arcep, the body which is to be set up to regulate the liberalized postal and electronic communications sector. If the amendment is passed, Arcep will be able to protect competition in the sector but will not have power over all of the operations of the French post office, La Poste.

Consolidation gains momentum in Europe’s Express and Parcels market

The latest findings to emerge from independent market analyst Datamonitor’s (DTM.L) “European Express Benchmarking 2004,” research reveals that the European* 34 billion Euro express market is consolidating. The top 6 players in the industry account for over 50% of these revenues compared to 2001, when they accounted for 44% of the market value and 47% of that in 2002. “The European express industry forms one of the fastest growing segments in the transportation business. Industry consolidation has continued apace as express and parcel delivery companies merge, make acquisitions and form strategic alliances in order to gain scale and enhance their capabilities. 2005 promises new opportunities for these companies with the expansion of the EU. Europe’s fast moving express industry proves difficult to keep track of and the players must be aware of competitors’ operations, changes within the industry and opportunities,” says Emilio Pedrinaci, courier and express analyst at Datamonitor.
