French La Poste faces strike by IT staff

La Poste, the French postal service operator, faced a call for strike action in the IT department of its financial services division. The trade union SUD PTT was protesting against the creation of a credit institution with the threat of extensive IT outsourcing.

It is reported that, out of 490 members of staff at the Gradignan site, 166 participated in industrial action.

French post office and Caisses d’Epargne in talks on banking services for disadvantaged

The French minister for social cohesion, Jean-Louis Borloo, has asked the French post office, La Poste, and the French mutual savings bank Caisses d’Epargne to take part in a government scheme to provide banking services to those who are currently denied them. The programme, whose details have yet to be decided, is intended to provide all French people with access to what the minister calls a minimum level of banking support. When unveiling the policy last week, he explained that five million people in France are either on a credit black list or simply do not have access to banking services.

French La Poste launches electronic registered letter

La Poste, France has launched an electronic Registered Letter (“Lettre Recommandée Electronique”) which is sent over the Internet and delivered in hard copy by the postman. The service is available to senders from La Poste’s website. Individuals can purchase a single letter online, while regular business senders can choose between three annual subscription rates. Electronic registered mail offers proof of posting via e-mail to the sender, confirmation of contents and online storage.

Spanish competition commission approves La Poste purchase

The Spanish competition commission has authorised the purchase of 12.8 per cent of courier company Seur by French postal service provider La Poste. La Poste, which is owned by the French government, has paid 90m euros for its share in Seur and acquired 60 per cent of the company’s Madrid franchise, the largest branch in the Seur network.

Press unions contact minister over postal charges

The French magazine and news press unions SPMI and SPPMO are reported to have contacted the minister of industry regarding the planned increase in postal tariffs.

According to the unions, French postal service operator La Poste has demanded that the ministry increase postal charges for the press by 2.13 per cent with effect from July 1.
