French Post Office reforms widened

The French parliament’s economic affairs commission is planning to introduce an amendment to the bill concerning reforms to the French post office, La Poste, when the legislation is debated by the French senate. If it is adopted, the amendment will enable La Poste to set up a credit institution governed by existing law. Such a reform would effectively turn the French post office into a financial institution like any other in France, with the right to provide consumer credit.

Paris finance ministry postpones publication of La Poste savings report

The Paris finance ministry is postponing the publication of a report on the savings products offered by La Poste, the French post office, and Caisse d’Epargne and Credit Mutuel. The aim of the study, commissioned in the autumn of 2003, was to see if the commission paid to these groups by the state is in line with the real costs of the products.

French La Poste to sign development plan

La Poste, the French national postal services group, is scheduled to sign its development plan with the government on January 13. The plan outlines strategy for the group until 2007. La Poste was not authorised to include in the plan the extension of its financial services to include consumer credit. Although the agreement does not affect the public company’s statutes, it is designed to bring it closer to the main European postal operators by 2010, mainly by modernising its sorting centres.
