Troubled TAT Express France looks to cut jobs

The French post office’s B2B express parcels unit, TAT Express, is to streamline more sharply than it had initially planned.

Last autumn the company presented a programme of 479 job cuts, only to see it annulled by a commercial tribunal.

Amid a worsening economic climate, mounting losses and delays in introducing restructuring measures, the company says it is now necessary to axe 539 jobs out of a total workforce of 1,800 and close 14 depots.

Sorting overhaul for French La Poste

French post office, La Poste, has unveiled plans to invest €3.4bn over the next six years in a programme to restructure its mail-processing activities. The scheme includes the investment of hundreds of millions of euros in automating the procedure. To that end, La Poste has already ordered a total of 100 new sorting machines which can process more than 40,000 letters per hour, compared with 35,000-38,000 letters with existing equipment.

Management overhaul planned at La Poste

A series of new appointments are planned at La Poste, the French national postal services group. They include Marc-Andre Feffer, the former vice-chairman of Canal+ (Vivendi Universal), who will reportedly replace Nicolas Routier in January as managing director in charge of strategy. Mr Routier is expected to become chairman of the group’s subsidiary Mediapost, replacing Philippe Grangeon, who is leaving.

The postal and telecommunications division of French union CGT has called on postal workers to take part in a national day of strike action in the second half of January. The union is protesting against what it calls “political refocusing” by the management of La Poste.

France’s La Poste sees breakeven in 2004 & sales growth of 2.4%

State-owned La Poste said it forecasts a breakeven net profit on ordinary operations before taxes for 2004. La Poste said it forecasts sales growth of 2.4 pct in 2004. For 2002, the company saw sales growth of 1.8 pct at 17.3 bln eur. La Poste said last month it plans to invest 3.4 bln eur between 2004-2010 to modernise its postal business.
