New Zealand Post battles electronic mail

The amount of personally addressed junk mail could double as New Zealand Post tries to find ways to arrest falling letter volumes.

The state-owned postal service is looking for ways to improve the quality of the household mailing lists that it sells to business customers who in turn use the information to send personalised advertising.

Letter volumes have been falling by up to 4 per cent a year for several years as people replace pen and paper with email and other electronic communication.

“The biggest single challenge we face is clearly the continuing use by customers of letters as a means of communication,” New Zealand Post chief executive John Allen said.

The best way to do that was to further increase the use of mail by business customers.

22.7 percent want Japan Post privatisation during current Diet session

Only 22.7 percent of Japanese people polled want the government to legislate a set of bills for privatising Japan Post, the state-run postal services provider, during the current Diet session, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday.

The poll found that 53.9 percent of the responding eligible voters in the nationwide telephone survey conducted Saturday and Sunday believe the government should have extensive discussions over the privatisation without sticking to enactment during the current session to June 19.

The poll was conducted on 1,471 households, with valid responses received from 1,015.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has long characterized Japan Post privatisation as the focal point of his reform programs.

Japan Post gaining partners for parcel delivery service

Ministop Co. announced on March 1 that it will begin handling Japan Post's Yu-Pack parcel delivery service at its 1,684 convenience stores, becoming the second convenience-store operator to do so following Lawson Inc.

By signing up Ministop to handle the Yu-Pack drop-off service at all locations, Japan Post has succeeded in converting another convenience store operator that had been doing business with parcel delivery pioneer Yamato Transport Co.

Ministop currently conducts a similar service for Yamato, but it is expected to switch to Yu-Pack because the leading door-to-door parcel delivery firm does not allow Ministop and other business partners to offer rival services.

Royal Mail Group UK make high-tech drive to track lost letters

Royal Mail is to use microchip technology to track errant post after accusations that it mislays a million letters a week.

The organisation plans to spend millions of pounds on a surveillance system that will help it to find out how letters get lost and where they end up.

Test letters will be fitted with microchips and sorting offices with tracking devices. The system will track the letters at different points of their journey, and help to identify weak points.

But the move is likely to anger postal unions if they believe that the system is being used to monitor individual workers. A source at the Communication Workers Union said: “There would need to be a strict protocol on where and how it is used.”
