TPG says ‘preliminary’ talks continuing with Japan Post over possible alliance

Japan’s state postal service and Dutch post and logistics group TPG are holding preliminary talks about a possible future alliance, a spokeswoman for TPG Post said.

Earlier yesterday media in Japan reported that TPG executives have been holding talks with Japan Post since Tuesday on details of the alliance, expected to focus on international express services.

In the Netherlands TPG Post spokeswoman Daphne Andriessen would only confirm that the two parties had agreed last year to hold preliminary talks on the possibility of a future alliance.

‘We are holding exploratory talks and these talks are currently continuing,’ she told Agence France-Presse.

No official was immediately available at Japan Post to confirm the reports.

Dutch TPG not in talks with Austrian Post

Dutch TPG NV is not in talks yet with Austrian Post AG about a possible takeover of a stake in the company, TPG spokesman Tanno Massar said on January 13, 2005. The Austrian State Holding (ÖIAG) said, it planned to list a part of Austrian Post on the stock exchange in 2006. TPG has earlier said, it was interested in a majority stake in European sector companies, including Austrian Post AG. TPG targets a majority stake, however if this is impossible, it does not mean that the company is no more interested, Massar said.

Japan Post to improve collaboration with TPG NV

Japan Post will boost collaboration with TPG NV to find ways to hasten international deliveries and tracking mail and parcel deliveries on the Internet, Nikkei English News reported, without citing anyone. The two companies may also establish a joint venture, build a network for delivering cargo by air in Asia and share capital, Nikkei said.

Polish investment funds to sell at post offices

By the end of January Poczta Polska (PP) Polish Post will select three or four investment fund management firms (TFIs), which will receive exclusive rights to carry out their sales at post office branches. PP sent out tender invitations to all TFIs. “So far we have received one offer. There are many enquiries concerning more specifics on the part of TFIs, however. I think that by 19 January there will be many more offers,” said Mariusz Wnuk, the director of PP’s market and financial services department.

Spanish Competition Court imposes 78.8 Mln Euro fines in 2004

Spanish competition court Tribunal de Defensa de la Competencia (TDC) imposed 78.8 mln euro (USD103.3 mln) fines in 2004, a seven fold year-on-year increase, it was reported on January 12, 2005. Fines were imposed on 33 companies, three business associations, one professional organisation, and one fishermen association breaching the competition rules in Spain. The second largest fine of 15 mln euro (USD19.7 mln) was imposed on state-run postal services provider Sociedad Estatal Correos y Telegrafos SA (Correos).
