Royal Mail to shell out GBP60m for post strike

Royal Mail has pledged to pay nearly GBP60m in compensation to businesses as a result of the disruption to mail services caused by last year’s unofficial industrial action. The company, which has already paid out more GBP50m, will return an extra GBP7m. The move comes as the postal operator claims UK firms have escaped the latest round of price hikes, with the freezing of rates for bulk business mail services Mailsort 2 and 3. First-class stamps will rise by 2p to 30p in April. But Postwatch chairman Peter Carr has poured scorn on the claims: “Once again, Royal Mail is increasing revenues by asking small businesses to pay more for stamps. These are the customers least likely to be offered a competitive alternative. Meanwhile, those most likely to be offered a competitive alternative will see price decreases.”

TPG NV shares were slightly lower in line with broader market sentiment as the Dutch government formally approved plans to liberalise the country’s postal market, dealers said.

This means the Dutch market will be fully liberalised in 2007, if the UK and German postal markets are also opened up.

Further, stamp prices for consumers will remain unchanged until that time, while TPG’s competitors and customers will be treated equally in terms of rates and conditions.

TPG welcomed the news, calling government support an important step for the future of the postal market in the Netherlands and for TPG.

The postal vision of Laurens Jan Brinkhorst, Minister of Economic Affairs, was discussed in Parliament today. This vision, which provides clarity on the future liberalisation of the Dutch postal market, received support from the Members of Parliament. The support from Parliament means that there is clarity about the following issues: full liberalisation of the postal market in 2007 (conditional on full market liberalisation in the UK and Germany), the price of a stamp for consumers will remain at 39 euro cents in 2004, 2005 and 2006, from 2007, rates for services provided under the universal service obligation will be regulated using a price cap system linked to inflation. Non-discrimination is applicable to the services of TPG. Competitors and customers to be treated equally in terms of rates and conditions.

PROFILE – RICHARD ROCHE, Head of RM multi-channel retail strategy

As the man responsible for Royal Mail’s multi-channel retail strategy, Richard Roche is keen to help etailers deliver on the promise of Internet shopping, he tells Clare Goff

There are no postmen at Royal Mail’s media centre in Covent Garden. Indeed, the office looks more like a creative hotshop, with its glass walls and open-plan layout. “We deliberately wanted to give the appearance of an agency,” says Richard Roche, head of multi-channel retail.

While others deliver the letters, Roche – with 20 years of financial services marketing behind him – concentrates on the delivery process itself. His expertise is in helping businesses use the medium of mail as a marketing or logistics tool.
