Polish Post planning to develop joint-stock company

Polish Post is aiming to develop into a joint-stock company by the first half of next year. “We are trying to change our company’s status from a public utility enterprise to a joint-stock company,” said PP’s executive director Tadeusz Bartkowiak during a Sejm Infrastructure Committee meeting. “We want the change to occur as soon as possible and we are hoping that the Sejm will be able to work on the issue in the first half of 2005,” he added. UPU, COMESA discuss postal sector reform

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) on Monday began a two-day workshop here involving communication officers to discuss postal sector reforms in the economic bloc. Zambian acting minister of communication and transport, Ludwig Sondashi emphasised the importance of modernising the postal services in COMESA, saying that remained the main means of communication amongst the majority of the people since COMESA was in the primary stages of development. “Although the world is now a single village under globalization, most of the rural areas are not covered by the ICT services, thus the post still serves as the sole means available to the ordinary citizen,” he noted.

Austrian Post to Inform Municipalities About Closing Post Offices

From next week onwards, the Austrian Post will inform the municipalities concerned about the closing of post offices, said reports on Friday.

On ORF radio, Austrian Post General Secretary Viktoria Kickinger spoke of an “optimisation of the existing branch network”. There was no reason to maintain branch offices that were not frequented by customers, she indicated.

In the long run, more than the 350 to 400 post offices presently under discussion could be closed down, Kickinger said. About 1,000 of the 1,640 post offices were “not really profitable”.

According to reports by regional media and members of the opposition, two of the biggest Austrian provinces – Lower Austria and Upper Austria – were the ones to be affected the most. From March to June of 2005, about 100 post offices in Lower Austria and 80 in Upper Austria were to be closed down.

An Post Faces 50m Hit After ‘Cosy Deal’ Grumble

Struggling semi-state firm, An Post, could be facing a devastating 50m hit, following a complaint that the lucrative social welfare payments contract was a “cosy deal” in breach of Government procurement policies.

The British government has added to the pressure on An Post, with a report that pinpointed the contract with the Department of Social Welfare as one example of British companies being discriminated against by other countries when public contracts were being awarded.

Payments firm TNS Ltd lodged two complaints with the EU following the extension of An Post’s contract in 2002. A complaint relating to alleged breaches of procurement policy is expected to be ruled on in the first half of next year, according to Department of Social Welfare sources.
