Last post for (UK) High Street post offices – says Amicus

Amicus, Britain’s second largest union representing 15,000 managers and staff working for Royal Mail and other postal operators, will issue a wake-up call for action to be taken to protect the future of high street post offices when it meets backbench MPs in the House of Commons today. Amicus recognises that high street post offices are an essential community service that must be preserved at all costs. Peter Skyte, Amicus National Officer, said: “Without further action by Government and the public, this will be the last post for Britain’s high street post office network as it faces death by a thousand cuts. Royal Mail is selling off or closing an essential community service in a piecemeal fashion which will lead to greater financial and social exclusion.”

UOHS against Ceska posta’s monopoly on direct mail

The Czech anti-monopoly office UOHS said today it was against the current efforts at reintroducing state- run postal services operator Ceska posta’s monopoly on delivering direct mail. The service is also provided by Mediaservis, which has less than a 10 per cent share on the Czech market.
“Remonopolisation means a restriction of the emerging competitive environment and runs counter to the main objectives of competition protection,” UOHS chairman Josef Bednar told CTK. He added Ceska posta is a near-monopoly provider of direct mail, and that competition should secure prices and quality acceptable for consumers. “Customers thus will not pay more than necessary for this service,” Bednar said.

Deltec fined GBP17,000 for delivering mail services without a licence

A company that collected and delivered mail without a licence, and its managing director, were fined a total of GBP17,000, plus GBP60,000 costs at Bow Street Magistrates Court, London, last week, Postcomm revealed today. In the first prosecution of its type brought by Postcomm, Deltec International Courier Ltd was convicted on all 11 counts on which it was charged under section 6 of the Postal Services Act 2000 for conveying letters without a licence. Barry Ellis, the managing director, was convicted on 11 counts under section 120 of the Act for conniving in, consenting to or being neglectful of the offences by the company. Nigel Stapleton, chairman of Postcomm, said: “Prosecution isn’t an activity we take lightly. In this case Deltec was made aware on a number of occasions that it required a licence and chose to act outside the law. Protecting mail integrity through licensing is a vital safeguard for customers as we open up the market. All legitimate operators must have licences, and we will take firm action against anybody who deliberately operates without one.”
