TPG acquires remaining 50% stake in unaddressed mail network Höfinger Haushaltswerbung in Germany

TPG NV, through its subsidiary TPG Post Holdings (Deutschland) GmbH in Germany, has acquired the remaining 50% stake in Höfinger Haushaltswerbung GmbH. Höfinger provides services for unaddressed mail in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. TPG had previously obtained a 50% stake in Höfinger at the end of 2001. In 2003 Höfinger Haushaltswerbung had annual revenues of EUR7.3 million and delivered 215 million leaflets. Acquisition of the company gives TPG Post complete access to a network of 2,500 deliverers that reach approximately one million households in the Stuttgart area. “The takeover of Höfinger allows TPG Post to build further on its coverage and finely-meshed network in the German market for unaddressed mail,” said Harry Koorstra, Group Managing Director of TPG Post. “Expansion of our network is a cornerstone of TPG Post’s strategy to become the second largest postal company in Germany and Europe’s first truly pan-European postal company.”

UK Royal Mail seeks stamp price rise

Postage stamp prices must go up to ease Royal Mail’s financial problems, Adam Crozier, chief executive of the state-owned group, said yesterday. Royal Mail had returned to profit after several years of heavy losses but still lacked investment and had an old-fashioned pricing structure, he said. “None of our prices are aligned with our costs.” Business customers paid more to subsidise domestic stamp prices. Royal Mail was also pressing for the introduction of size-based, rather than weight-based, pricing of mail to better reflect the costs of sorting and delivery.

Business call for liberalisation of Dutch postal services market

Selekt Mail Nederland (SMN), a Deutsche Post subsidiary, has recently urged the Dutch Government to fully open up its postal market to competition. SMN says that Dutch postal provider TPG’s monopoly should be reduced to all letters weighing less than 50g on January 1, 2005 – not 2006 as the EU Postal Directive requires – and that there should be full market-opening in 2007. The pro-liberalisation Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI), which brings together users and competitors of public postal operators, has strongly backed the call. Under Directive 2002/39/EC, the current letter monopoly threshold is 100g, although Member States are free to open up their entire market to competition if they want to.
