Postwatch calls on UK Royal Mail to regain control of industrial relations

Postwatch, the postal services watchdog, has called on Royal Mail and the
Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) to regain control of industrial relations in and around London.

There has been a series of supposedly unrelated and unofficial walkouts that have severely disrupted postal services in the capital, since 17 October. Customers do not know whether they can use the post or when their mail will be delivered. Londoners are not receiving a Universal Postal Service.

Post delayed as strikes spread

Unofficial strikes by postal workers in London spread today, threatening delays to mail collections and deliveries.

Thousands of postmen and women were taking industrial action across the capital, with many mounting picket lines outside mail centres.

The dispute started when a driver was suspended but has spread as managers tried to move mail to other centres.

Dutch TPG upbeat despite third quarter loss

TPG, the Dutch-owned post, parcels and supply chain operator, sank to a third quarter pre-tax loss of EUR16m (USD18.5m), thanks to an expected EUR207m hit from European logistics.

Excellent mail and express performances in TPG’s third quarter

Peter Bakker, CEO said: Given the economic background, the results delivered by Mail and Express in the third quarter are outstanding achievements. Although the earnings in Logistics are still depressed, underlying performance has been stabilised. Highlights include solid improvement in free cash flow, excellent performances in Mail and Express, offset by lower earnings in Logistics, good progress in execution of Logistics transformation plan, goodwill impairment charge and asset write downs of EUR193 million in line with preliminary estimates leading to negative net income for quarter with the outlook for 2003 full year unchanged.
