USPS Starts Online Test of Business Service Network

The U.S. Postal Service has begun a test with six large mailers that will allow online access to its Business Service Network, which offers personalized service and help with unique mailing needs.

Previously, mailers had to go to postal locations to use the service.

Banking on the future of the Post Office network

Postcomm publishes its third annual report on the Post Office network today. In it, Postcomm says that significant progress has been made in implementing the key recommendations of the Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit’s 2000 report into the network. The last year has seen: the announcement of financial assistance for rural Post Offices, the start of the urban reinvention programme and improvements for remaining urban Post Offices, financial support for Post Offices in urban deprived areas and the launch of expanded banking facilities at Post Office branches.

Talks begin on privatization on Japan Post

A key government policy-making panel has kicked off discussions on privatization of the nation’s postal services, with members confirming the principle that privatization will be conducted in a way to stimulate the economy.

The Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy also confirmed it will pay close attention to the roles of the postal services in local communities and the issue of convenience for the people, economic and fiscal policy minister Heizo Takenaka told reporters after a meeting of the council.

Aso favors holding firm plan to privatise Japan post

Postal minister Taro Aso has said his ministry will consider privatizing postal services primarily under a holding company format.

“A lot of variations are conceivable” for privatization under a holding company, Aso, minister of public management, home affairs, posts and telecommunications, said during a House of Representatives committee session.
