Sept 17 postal ballot hugely significant after 12 year high in strike days
It is a fairly safe bet the 160,000 men and women who deliver our letters will vote to walk out over pay this month in their own postal ballot. When the returned slips are counted on September 17, the result will pose a major headache for Royal Mail bosses and Patricia Hewitt who, as trade secretary, is custodian of the publicly owned service.
The picketing of sorting offices and the downing of bags would also confirm the return of the strike as a prominent feature of UK industrial relations. Official statistics recorded 1,323,000 working days spent on strike last year, the highest since 1990, as firefighters and local government staff lit the braziers. The total was more than double the 525,100 counted in 2001 and over twice an annual average of 496,000 in the previous decade.

Royal Mail today announced plans to reshape its air distribution network in the latest stage of the complete restructuring of the way mail is moved around the UK. Royal Mail currently uses 39 flights each week night, from 24 airports, to distribute 6.6 per cent of the daily mailbag of 82 million items across the country. Now, to further improve efficiency and reduce costs, Royal Mail has decided to simplify its network. It will use larger jet aircraft to transport more mail – but using under half the number of services each week night, and operating from just 18 airports.

ISME, the Business Organisation, has questioned the role and judgement of ComReg in approving postal increases. This comes in advance of a report commissioned by them verifying increased levels of inefficiencies in An Post.
The report indicates that 71% of single piece mail items were delivered next day against a target of 94% laid down by ComReg.
Mark Fielding ISME Chief Executive stated, “It is clear that An Post are not delivering on cost reduction, not delivering on efficiency and in some cases are not delivering at all.”

Norway Post’s interim financial report for the first half of 2003 shows growth and a positive development in results. The company’s total operating revenues rose by five per cent. Its result before tax turned from minus to plus, compared with the first half of last year. Underlying operations improved by NOK 150 million. Restructuring projects are progressing according to schedule and the streamlining work continues.
