Williams appointed second USPS Inspector General

The Governors of the United States Postal Service have selected David C. Williams to be the second Inspector General of the United States Postal Service. The incumbent InspectorGeneral, Karla W. Corcoran, has expressed her intention to retire immediately and will do so with the thanks of the Governors for her service. Mr. Williams will assume his new duties immediately.

Blaster worm variant enters Japan Post computers

Japan Post has said a variant of the Blaster computer worm has intruded into some of the 6,000 computers on the postal services organization’s nationwide network for in-house communications.

The variant, the MS Blast D, has inflicted damage on computers at Japan Post’s Tokyo headquarters and nine branches from Hokkaido to Shikoku island, the state-run corporation said.

Vietnam Post and UPS set up joint venture

Vietnam’s largest telecom business, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), and the United Parcel Service Inc (UPS) of the United States have signed a contract to form a joint venture.

Under the contract, the two sides will jointly deliver information, goods and funds to over 200 countries and territories worldwide covered by the UPS global service network. For the time being, Vietnam will be included in the UPS global air delivery network.

Postal groups not keen to cover in strike

Private sector postal companies are lukewarm about providing cover if there is a national postal strike, undermining a central plank of the Royal Mail’s bargaining strategy with unions.
The Royal Mail has warned the union it “will not emerge from even the threat of a ballot unscathed . . . If postmen and women walk out, customers will walk away and competitors walk in.” But the private companies claim to be lukewarm about the prospect of delivering post in the event of a strike. Four companies – Hays, TPG of the Netherlands, UK Mail and Express Dairies – hold licences to operate in the UK postal market, mostly handling business post.

US Postal Reform Hearing Possible for Sept 3

The U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs Committee may hold a hearing Sept 3 to discuss the recommendations of the presidential postal reform commission.
A hearing has been discussed but will not be officially scheduled until all members of the committee are served with notice of the proposed date, a committee representative said yesterday. Although the Senate is in its summer recess and returns to session Sept 2.

The presidential postal commission sent its recommendations to the White House at the end of July. Proposed reforms in the report called for increased automation, fewer employees, changes to the collective bargaining process and increased power to close unprofitable post offices.
