Consultation On Changes To Post Office Network – Post Office Ltd proposes two additional branches for closure in the Bristol and Somerset area

Post Office Ltd recently confirmed decisions reached following local public consultation into its Bristol and Somerset area plan. As a result of the feedback received, Post Office Ltd amended its original proposal and decided not to proceed with the closure of three branches at Bear Flat, Lower Weston and West End.

In order to ensure that the planned future network can be supported by the available funding from Government and meets the criteria it has set, including the requirement that no part of the UK is advantaged or disadvantaged relative to other areas, Post Office Ltd is now proposing the permanent closure two branches at Southgate and Hinton St George. A six week public consultation on these new proposals will begin on 17 June.

In proposing these branches for closure, Post Office Ltd has taken into account that customers would be able to access Post Office® services from nearby branches.

Pos Malaysia to disburse rebates

National postal services provider Pos Malaysia Bhd has been appointed as the agent to disburse the rebates promised by the government to car and motorcycle owners.

Malaysians can start claiming the subsidies at all 686 post offices nationwide beginning July 1, where vehicle owners who made the claims personally at post offices will be paid in cash, Pos Malaysia said in a statement yesterday.

To help citizens cope with the fuel price hike, the government has promised a road tax subsidy for vehicle owners from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009. Owners of 2000cc and below cars and of up to 2500cc pick-up trucks and jeeps are entitled to RM625 for each vehicle. Those with motorcycles of up to 250cc will receive RM150 each.

Vehicle owners who send third parties to make claims, however, need to furnish Pos Malaysia with their mailing addresses, after which money orders will be mailed to the respective owners.

Details of the claims procedures and required documents would be revealed soon, Pos Malaysia said.

In an interview by La Poste Magazine, regarding the future law on the liberalization of the postal sector, Ulrich Gygi, Head of Swiss Post mentioned that liberalization would be beneficial to commercial clients, whereas private customers could benefit from competition from a qualitative point of view but not necessarily through a reduction of prices.

Correos includes environmental sustainability as a corporate value

Correos is promoting an environmental sustainability and good practices strategy, both in its direct activities and by means of agreements and contracts signed with its partners and technology allies in all spheres of its activities, which will considerably boost its Corporate Social Responsibility policy. With this strategy, the postal operator makes a clear commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, in both its own activities and those carried out by the businesses it works with.

In its last Board of Directors meeting, held on 30 May, Correos adopted the agreement that formally includes environmental sustainability as a corporate value and as an urgent and general application principle. The Spanish postal operator will apply the strategies for the future defined by the IPC (International Post Corporation) in its recent meeting in Paris, the main strategic pillar of which urges the postal sector to design specific plans that reduce its emissions and represent a significant contribution to sustainability.

With this initiative, Correos seeks to position itself at the forefront of the fight against climate change and will contribute to meeting the environmental impact reduction objective set by Global Compact, the world-wide pact promoted by the UN, and signed by Correos, to foster best social practices among businesses.

Job cuts may be deal breaker in German bank merger

Three of Germany’s biggest lenders are mulling a merger that would create a new national banking champion but opposition to losing tens of thousands of jobs as a result could quickly render the plan unfeasible.

Commerzbank and Allianz are making a joint approach to buy the country’s biggest retail lender, Deutsche Postbank, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

A three-way tie-up involving Allianz’s Dresdner Bank unit would be big part of a broad shakeout of the German banking system triggered by a global credit crisis that has prompted massive writedowns and created deep uncertainty about future revenues among the country’s lenders.

Berlin would like to see a second big financial player that could hold its own on the international stage next to top lender Deutsche Bank, government sources have said.

With its nearly 15 million customers, Postbank is seen as a major prize in a fragmented banking market that is two-thirds dominated by public-sector and cooperative lenders.

But combining Commerzbank, Dresdner and Postbank could put 20,000 jobs at risk, services trade union Verdi has estimated.

A top Verdi official and Postbank supervisory board member threatened stiff resistance should Postbank parent Deutsche Post sell its 50 percent stake in the lender.

Financial sources said the German government was pushing to get the sales process moving to get a deal done while it still held a veto right over possible partners, a power it can exercise only until the end of the year.

Germany faces a general election next year, which may add pressure to get controversial bank mergers done quickly.

More than a third of Postbank’s 21,000 staff members are civil servants, a holdover from its history as a state enterprise, in effect guaranteeing they cannot be sacked.
