Chicago Center earns certificate of excellence (U.S)

The U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) international mail facility in Chicago has earned its second consecutive Certificate of Excellence award from an international organization dedicated to improving global postal services.

The J.T. Weeker International Service Center (ISC) in Chicago has been awarded its second Certificate of Excellence in international mail processing today by the 24-nation member International Post Corporation (IPC).

The J.T. Weeker ISC received its first IPC certification in 2004, becoming the first USPS facility to do so. All five USPS international centers have since received Certificates of Excellence, making the United States the only nation with its entire international mail processing network to be IPC-certified. The other U.S. centers are in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Certificates are awarded to international facilities that demonstrate top levels of quality, efficiency, teamwork and communications. Achieving certification is a year-long process including on-site reviews by the IPC to verify compliance and ongoing IPC validation that performance levels are maintained. IPC Head of Operations Toni Schneider presented the award and recognized J.T. Weeker employees for their teamwork and dedication to excellence.

The J.T. Weeker ISC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with 550 employees processing more than 253 million pieces of mail per year. It serves as the USPS gateway for international mail originating from or addressed to 16 Midwestern and Southwestern states.

Hermes Logistik Group to undercut Deutsche Post by 10-15 pct if minimum wage dropped

Hermes Logistik Group, the postal-services unit of privately held mail-order retailer Otto Group, plans to undercut Deutsche Post AG.’s letter prices by 10 percent to 15 percent should German courts strike down the minimum-wage rule for the industry. Hermes Chief Executive Hanjo Schneider told Die Welt that the group hopes to enter the market for letter delivery still dominated by former monopoly Deutsche Post in January 2009 but legal uncertainties are keeping him from making a forecast.
Should the highest German court squash the minimum wage rule, Hermes will immediately start offering letter delivery from all of its 13,500 German packet receiving offices. A Berlin court ruled in March that a German law imposing a minimum wage at all companies in the letter-carrier industry is illegal.
A higher court will probably rule on the issue in July.

UPU and Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP) strengthen their ties

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP), through the Declaration of Santo Domingo, urge the countries of Latin America to undertake postal sector reform.

The postal sector in Latin America, made up of public operators and a large number of private enterprises, is highly fragmented. With UPU assistance, postal sector reform has now been launched in nine Latin American countries, starting off with Costa Rica in 2005.

The integrated postal reform and development plans (IPDPs) replace an approach based solely on the restructuring of the public postal operator. These national plans, which take particular account of the universal postal service and of the regulatory and legal framework, provide for the whole sector. Since 2007, Latin America also has a regional development plan aimed at coordinating the activities of the various postal sector stakeholders.

At the regional conference of government authorities responsible for supervising the postal sector in the PUASP member countries, held in Santo Domingo (Dominican Rep.) on 22 and 23 May 2008, UPU Director General Edouard Dayan and PUASP Secretary General Serrana Bassini casci reiterated their commitment to cooperate in the development and good governance of the postal sector.

In a joint declaration signed by 22 of the region’s countries and territories, the UPU and PUASP encourage those countries which have not yet formulated an IPDP to do so, in conjunction with the UPU.
