The European Mail Manifesto: growth, partnership and innovation in a changing industry

The Postal Users Group has issued a manifesto on the main interests of business users of postal services to encourage the European Commission to take the postal users needs into account when it is preparing its next proposals on postal services this year. PUG, an alliance of the major postal users representing 15 trade associations and businesses, points out in its manifesto that the postal services cover a very wide range of businesses and systems. The letter mail business of Europe´s postal operators represent about 1 million jobs and revenues of 47 billion euro; however, PUG shows that the wider sector accounts for an additional 4 million jobs and over 150 billion euro of revenues.

Lombard Bank takes over equity in Maltapost

Lombard Bank Malta plc has reached an agreement with Transend Worldwide Ltd whereby it has acquired the New Zealand company’s 35 per cent shareholding in Maltapost plc, in a move that is widely seen as paving the way for Maltapost’s diversification efforts.

In a company announcement issued on Thursday, Lombard Bank said that it considers the investment to be of strategic importance and should result in added value to the stakeholders of both the Bank and Maltapost.

The deal went through following the approval by the Malta Financial Services Authority for the transfer of shares.

The Ministry for Investment, Industry and IT welcomed the transfer and expressed its believe that, with the entry of Lombard Bank, Maltapost would see the beginning of a new and exciting phase as it would now be able to use the expertise of its new shareholders to sustain its diversification efforts aimed at strengthening its capacity to deliver on its core postal activities.

The Ministry also extended its gratitude to Transend Worldwide Ltd. for its contribution in the profound restructuring and reform carried out at Maltapost in recent years.

Stamp price gap grows as European postal sector prepares for market opening

The Free and Fair Post Initiative (FFPI) today released its fifth survey
on stamp prices in the European Union (EU). The study, which covers the 25 EU member States, reveals that 20% of EU countries have increased stamp prices in the course of 2005 and that price differences are still wide. The annual comparative analysis of the FFPI points out that prices of stamps for basic domestic letters have increased in 5 member States1 during this year. In addition, the survey reports that the gap in prices between the old and new EU member States is still widening. It is in fact important to notice that costs have risen in 3 countries from the EU-15, therefore further enlarging the difference with the price in the new member States.
